7pm - 10pm - LittleSiUK
Three-in-one! Thanks Si :) I'm also going to sod changing the colour of other recapper's entries. It's a pain in my ass and I think you lot are clever enough to work out who is who :)
Before moving on to the recap, I want to say again that 24addict is now syndicated for those of you who prefer newsreaders. Here's the URL: http://www.24addict.com/atom.xml
And now, roll on Recaps!
-----------------------------------------
7pm - 10pm!
Sorry about the absence of recaps for the last few weeks, I'm sure you are all devastated! However, I intend to amend that mistake right now by giving you three glorious hours of TV's greatest viewing experience, summed up in one glorious post!
Having seen the trailer for episode 16, I know it is going to be BIG, so want to get ready in every possible way. Low on space and time, I will change the format of these recaps slightly, with a brief summary of key events followed by a small review.
So, off we go, enjoy!
7pm - 8pm:
The cool episode.
This proved to be one of my favourites of the season so far, with some great action, writing, and great character moments, specifically concerning a couple of ex-lovebirds we all know well.
Summary:
It seems that Habib Marwan, the central bad-ass behind everything so far, such as Heller's kidnapping and the nuclear meltdowns, was all along working under an alias in the employ of defence contractor McLennan Forster. Jack and Paul have since gone to said company, to recover any information they can on his operations whilst living in the US. MF however are worried that anything they can uncover will incriminate them and subsequently destroy the company. Having worked too long and too hard to get it up and running they are not about to risk it all for the sake of anything so petty as national security. Their head of security Mr. Conlon decides, as a result, to set off an EMP in order to destroy any information CTU could possibly get off their systems, as well as all electrical equipment in an 8 block radius. Luckily though, Paul and Jack were able to recover an encoded document of some kind from the computer which MF were none too happy about, which means whatever it is has to be destroyed along with the CTU agent and his friend.
Before CTU can send in search teams, they call in a squad of mercenaries to eliminate the two men and take back the document. Jack and Paul hide amongst the looting and chaos that has erupted since the detonation in the blacked out zone, taking cover in a sporting goods store owned by two middle-eastern brothers. Attempting to appease any Muslims angered by 24's current representation of such communities, these two characters heroically opt to help Jack thwart the terrorists. A shootout ensues as Jack knows the large firefight will show up on CTU's infra-red scans of the area, and draw in their field teams. Surely enough it does, and they show up in the nick of time to shoot Conlon in the back.
Over at CTU, Michelle assigns Tony to some very menial duties, which doesn't go down very well with him, and then she fires Sarah who demands the same rise in pay and promotion promised to her by Erin Driscoll 3 hours ago. Come on Sarah, your hot but this is hardly the time nor the place! Michelle and Tony argue some more, when he believes they should put their field teams in a concentrated area around the MF building, as opposed to her beliefs that they should patrol the perimeter. He of course turns out to be right though, when Jack does exactly what he thought he would and creates a firefight to draw their attention. By 8pm, Michelle has decided there is value to Tony's input, but he has decided to leave, having had too many uncomfortable memories stirred up since her arrival. In a very touching scene, she asks him to stay.
Audrey meanwhile is having doubts about her relationship with Jack after watching him fry her ex's ass with electrical cord in his hotel room. Heller tries to justify it but now she has seen this side to her lover it is clear the relationship, however long it lasts, will suffer for this.
Come the end of the episode, it seems all is well and good, when suddenly the thought-dead Conlon springs to life long enough to take a shot at Jack. Mercifully though, Paul Raines takes the bullet for him and drops to the floor. Jack shoots Conlon and rushes to Paul's aide. He doesn't look good and Jack is distraught, having promised his girlfriend he would take care of him. Oops, how's he gonna explain this one?
Cliff-hanger: Marwan communicates covertly with some American named Anderson who has gotten hold of an Air Force uniform. He says that the ...President of the United States is on a tight schedule, we can't be late...."

Rating: 4/5.
Why? - The stuff with the Muslim brothers in the store could have been awful, but great writing saved it. They instead became two very likeable, not overdone characters, despite their purpose being obvious.
The stuff with Tony and Michelle - Very nice. I also liked how they kind of turned Michelle's character into a hard-ass who gets things wrong, in the vein of Chappelle and Mason. She makes the wrong call regarding Jack, fires Sarah in a heartbeat, and tells the CTU staff the recovery of the printout overrules Jack and Paul's safety. It is also great how they grew so much closer by the end of the hour.
A cracking line from Tony to Audrey: "Some men are more comfortable in hell." Paul Raines"character arc - A stuck up A-hole to a likeable and sympathetic partner for Jack, should've seen that coming but I didn't. When Jack was electrocuting him I can't say I imagined the two of them fighting off a team of mercenaries side by side in two hours time. 24 does these things oh so very well.
The relationship btw. Audrey and Jack is seriously on the rocks. At first I thought they would drop the whole electrocution thing but it really came back to bite our hero in the ass this hour!
Finally, gotta love the action!
Newayz, onto the next one!
8pm - 9pm:
Hostage scenario.
Another good one this week, which to me was in the vein of season one with a lot of that same kind of tension created. I am still trying to work out if it is better than 13 but will rank it the same if I fail to produce an answer.
Summary: Paul Raines is rushed to CTU where a team of medics scrambles to keep him alive. Audrey is stunned and demands that Jack promise her he will live. He cannot do that and can only apologise fervently that this has happened.
Meanwhile, CTU has the printout and uncovers a name from the encoding - Joseph Fayed - some professor with a local university. He is apparently an expert in chemical engineering, which, combined with a terrorist cell, is never good.
Michelle wants to send in teams to grab him from his home but Jack stops her. He has a better idea; if they bring him in and can't get him to talk, they're no closer to Marwan, but if they send someone undercover they have a chance. Tony is reluctant, until Jack offers up Dina Araz as the snitch. They could convince her to lead them to Marwan through Fayed. However, he knows CTU has her in custody so how can they pull this off? Jack has an answer for that too, they can create a cover story - Dina was being transferred from custody when accomplices of Navi hit her transport to try and rescue her. Jack managed to kill off all the attackers, but then Dina herself took him hostage.
By offering her a new life with her son in the witness protection program, they convince Dina to go along with this and she does so, on the condition she is allowed to see her son in what is an extremely emotional reunion. Dina then drives to Fayed's house with Jack in tow and to make her story more believable, he stabs himself in the gut.
Joseph is alarmed to see her, but seems to fall for her story and contacts Marwan, who arranges for them to be brought to him. To help tail them, Michelle calls in someone she knows is an expert with satellite surveillance: Chloe O' Brian: YAY! She is reluctant at first but agrees as it can be of service to Jack. Still, none of the agents can stop what happens next. Fayed drives into an underground tunnel out of sat range, where the follow cars lose sight of him. Maintenance workers then grab Jack and Dina, putting them in the back of a van and handing Fayed a briefcase. Realising the car is empty except for the driver when satellite picks it up again; CTU orders its teams to close in. Fayed stops the car on the bridge and detonates the C4 that the case is loaded with.
Jack and Dina in the meantime are handed over to Marwan who refuses to believe Dina's story and demands she proves herself by killing Jack. Pointing the gun at his head, she suddenly takes aim at Marwan and fires: on an empty chamber. Oopsie. Marwan smiles, he suspected as much. His men shoot Dina and Jack is carried away.
Back at CTU, Audrey realises how much she cares for Paul, now his life is hanging in the balance. Things don't look good for Jack.....
Elsewhere, Marwan's plan seems to be coming to fruition. An Air Force pilot is held hostage by his girlfriend who it seems is being paid by the mysterious Anderson. He pays the pilot a visit and drives him to the nearby military base at which he works. The pilot gets him past security as more of Marwan's men are holding his family hostage. However, the family is killed, as is the pilot, once their use has expired and Anderson is inside. He then uses the pilot's severed thumb and access card to enter an aircraft hangar where a stealth bomber is waiting. Uh oh, gulp, etc........

Rating: 3/5.
A tense one this week compared to the action packed events of hour 13, the 'shoot Jack to prove your loyalty' sequence at the end shouldn't have worked because the same had already been done with Jack and Chase in season 3, but it did. I was in added suspense because I knew they wouldn't repeat the same conclusion twice by having her pull the trigger and it be empty. Okay, so that's what happened but this time it was a little different as she pointed the weapon at Marwan and paid the ultimate price for it. The whole following of Jack in the car was tense too; as you just know something is gonna go horribly wrong. Finally, I don't know what Anderson is planning, but I just know it's building to something big! The inter-office politics were also nice at CTU this week, with Tony and Michelle's interactions continuing to be a crowd-pleaser as well as Audrey's feelings for Paul coming to light more and more. Dammit, she can't leave Jack for him! I mean the guy wasn't as bad as we thought but come on!
The opening with Jack's helo landing at CTU and his and Audrey's reunion was a great scene.
Finally, great to see Chloe back bitching as usual, but I don't like how with her reappearance they seem to feel the need to make Edgar's character an asshole, he was really cool and that just annoys me. Can they not be happy with having two cool geeks at CTU?!?
One more to go......
9pm - 10pm.
The exchange.
A lot of people had a problem with this episode and okay, I can see why, but I was pleasantly surprised to be honest. A friend of mine read some spoilers and warned me this one wasn't that great, but I thought it was fine. If I'd been told in advance that the exchange with Jack and Behrooz wasn't gonna come until the last 5 minutes, I would've thought: Crap, the rest will just be some stupid filler stuff, but it wasn't, and the tension was perfectly maintained.
Summary: Marwan and his men learn that the air force pilot's dead family has been discovered, which means that, as he is military personnel, this information will be flagged by LAPD and forwarded up to the CTU. This is very bad for them, as it could give the agency a chance to piece together their plan before Anderson can take-off. They have to stop that somehow. This becomes even more imperative when Anderson discovers his plane has been grounded due to a fault with the landing gear. Jack however, gives the terrorists the perfect opportunity to do this. They had kept him alive up till now in order to find out what else CTU knows about their operations, outside of Fayed, but Marwan soon realises that if they offer him up in exchange for Behrooz, this could provide the perfect distraction. CTU will waste time trying to find out why the child is so important, as well as setting up the trade if they decide to agree to it, which means that their resources will be kept from investigating the dead pilot's family once this intel comes through.
The plan works as Michelle and her team scramble to find Behrooz's connection to Marwan, to the point of sending in the dreaded Richards to interrogate him with his nasty array of syringes, filled with who knows what. As they find nothing, it seems they have no options left other than to agree to the trade. Although they can't risk losing a lead like Behrooz if indeed he is so vital, the exchange could get them closer to Marwan, which at the moment they are certainly not. Bill Buchanan from Division consents to the trade having heard all of the options available, and Behrooz is prepared, still in the dark about his mum's fate. To keep tabs on him, a decoy tracking device is placed in his watch and, in case that is found, a second is embedded into his neck. Naturally, Behrooz is terrified at the prospect of being given to Marwan, and Curtis tries to console him.
Meanwhile, at Marwan's hideout, Jack spots a telephone panel box near to where he is chained up and short circuits some of the wires out of view of his captors. To cover this, he then kicks a couple of henchmen to the floor despite being cuffed to the wall. What a guy! They knock him out and take him to the dam where the trade will take place. At the air force base, Anderson shoots the mechanic who gave his plane the once over and, posing as him, informs the supervisor that the reported error was a mistake; the plane's as good as new. The stupid fool subsequently clears the man for take-off.
In the final act, the trade takes place. A sniper poised on a nearby rooftop is told to shoot Jack by Marwan once they have the boy, but just as he is about to make good on that, the seemingly alone Curtis is surrounded by Lee Castle's team, one of whom takes out the sniper.
Marwan's men find both trackers on Behrooz, cutting the latter one out of his neck with a knife - Ouch! They also kindly inform that his mother is dead. He goes into denial, shocked by the news.
It seems that CTU is once again left with nothing, but at the last second, Jack comes through for them. Even when he's being held captive, he still manages to be more productive than the whole office put together! Letting them know about the phone lines he tampered with, CTU scans the area within a 20 mile radius of the dam and quickly picks up the faulty line on the phone boards system. They prepare a tac team as Anderson takes to the skies....
CTU too remains unaware of the pilots dead family, the CD containing the information simply tossed onto a pile of them on Edgar's desk during the trade.
So, with an attack on Marwan and the conclusion of Anderson's plan imminent, how can 16 not be good?!? The previews certainly suggest it will be! And I quote - ...It's been a season full of mind-blowing suspense, but nothing has prepared you for what's coming next!" "We promise you a twist so shocking it will change everything!"
That's a lot to live up to on this show but the production team have been rumoured as saying that 16 is one of their greatest achievements so who knows. I certainly can't wait! See ya next week!
Ep 15 rating:
3/5. Fairly average but nowhere near as bad as some people claimed. Filler stuff maybe, but very tense well handled filler stuff so who cares. Roll on ep 16!
