10pm - 12am - LittleSI
10pm - 12am
The recap for 18 will be with you all shortly!
Well, time to hit the ground running with FOX's supposedly oh so shocking episode number 16:
10pm - 11pm
Well, I have to say this was very good, but FOX did waaayyy over hype it. The fact that they warned us in advance it would be so shocking made the ending more inevitable and predictable to be honest. Not to mention the fact that the series has been building to an attack on the President since 8pm.
Still, as I said, one can't argue with the quality that is there, so here's a basic rundown of events for ya:
The episode opens with Keeler informing CTU that he intends to land within the hour in order to reassure the public from the ground on the 11 o'clock news. Michelle and Tony try to discourage him, claiming it's safer to remain in the air with everything that's been happening (how wrong could they be!), but he refuses, thanking them for their concern.
Then, it's over to Jack who has just arrived outside Marwan's hideout along with a fully equipped CTU strike team who are getting ready to go in. However, first things first he calls Audrey to make an attempt to patch things up; he knows they need to talk about how he handled Paul and is pleased to hear that the doctors are optimistic. He says they will talk once they have Marwan.
Inside meanwhile, Marwan is taking a call from Nicole, the one who lured the unlucky Air Force pilot into bed, who is currently sifting through the apartment of one of Marwan's associates. Apparently, the man hid a hard drive in there containing a back-up copy of all of their files which unfortunately could give away what they have planned next were it to be found. Marwan can't help her though because the man who lived there, Aziz, was killed. Now, I'm not sure who Aziz was or even if we saw him die on screen, but to be honest, with Jack Bauer taking down terrorists at a rate of knots as always it's kind of hard to keep track. Perhaps it was the sniper who went down during the trade-off in 15. Anyway, it's all good because Nicole reminds Marwan that Anderson shared his apartment with Aziz so it could be that he knows where the hard drive is. Marwan says he will get back to her.
Anderson can't really help much though and it is when Marwan is on the phone to him that he notices the phone cord Jack messed with in order to lead them to the hideout. Realization dawning, he ends the call and moves through to a back room where he arms some sort of remote detonator....
Cue a FANTASTIC action sequence now as Jack and the CTU teams raid the warehouse, blowing open the doors and barging through them in a Humvee. Bad guys go down left, right and centre, mostly because of Jack, who also uses his knife on one of them. Marwan hurries up a flight of steps and out through a fire exit, as chaos rages below. Once all the cell-members are down, Jack finds a computer which is in the process of deleting all of its files. He is unable to halt the process and before he has a chance to, he notices a bomb concealed under one of the desks. The whole room is wired to blow! Just as he sees this, Marwan reaches the ground outside, having climbed down a ladder from the roof, and detonates the explosives.
Jack and the team dive for cover, narrowly escaping death as debris fly's everywhere. Jack lets Michelle know that all of the computers have been taken out and there is no sign of Marwan.
Damn, this guy's hard to catch! Finishing the call to CTU, Jack notices one of Marwan's men is still alive, but bleeding heavily on the floor. He tries to extract information from him, but all he is able to find out is that something is going to go down within the hour, and he'll never be able to stop it....
Back at CTU, doctors break the bad news to Audrey that there's a good chance Paul is going to be paralysed from the waist down. Her resulting emotional conversation with Paul yet again bodes rather badly for Jack and their future relationship....
At the warehouse, Jack finds a series of documents that survived the explosion. It appears Marwan's men had been forging passports and driver's licences for some of their associates and Jack uploads the pictures to Edgar so he can check them against their watch list. They get a match. It is Mitch Anderson. The man was put in a military prison before being dishonourably discharged some time ago, after which he became a mercenary for hire. He has been on the watch list for a while now, but he was bumped up as a priority not long after the raised threat level. The FBI has already sent an agent to his apartment. Jack asks to be put in touch with her immediately.
Meanwhile, said agent arrives at the apartment where Nicole was seen searching only minutes ago. She doesn't last long though because Nicole shoots her in the back pretty much the second she steps in the door. It is then that her phone rings. It is Jack. Nicole takes the call and pretends to be Agent Drake, asking Jack when he will be there and telling him she will be waiting when he arrives....
Aboard Air Force One, Keeler is struggling with his speech to the nation, it still isn't sounding right and he decides to ask his son Kevin for advice. This pretty much seals his fate: the fact that the writers have introduced a child to make him seem more sympathetic a character is pretty much confirmation that he isn't going to be around much longer. Nevertheless, it is a very nice scene between the two of them and I continue to be impressed with the quality of the guest stars 24 is hiring every week.
Back at the apartment, Jack arrives with another agent, who clearly has huge bull's-eyes all over him, and liaises with the so called Agent Drake. She claims to have received intelligence from her office that somewhere in this apartment is a hard drive detailing Marwan's next plan, and thus enlists the help of the two men in searching for it. Jack seems suspicious, but agrees to help out.
Over at CTU, Edgar is busy putting together a report for Michelle when Chloe interrupts. Because of the radiation, it appears they're not going to be able to go in and get his mother's body for weeks, maybe even months. It looks like he'll be having a funeral without the body. Visibly upset but trying to stay strong, Edgar pushes on with the report. Chloe monitors his work and notices he has made a major error just as he is about to hand it over to Michelle. Stopping him, she tells Michelle that it was her mistake and subsequently takes the heat. Edgar is surprised and grateful that Chloe helped him out like that.
Sifting through Anderson's closet, Jack finds the empty bag that once contained Anderson's military uniform, along with a dated tag from Vanguard, who are known uniform manufacturers. Jack is confused as the date on the tag comes after his discharge from the military, leading him to the conclusion that Anderson could be posing as a military officer. Downstairs, the anonymous CTU agent goes to hook up his laptop when he notices that the electrical outlet in the wall has been tampered with. Moving it to one side, he sees that it in fact conceals a small hole, wherein he discovers the mysterious hard drive. Nicole is alerted and stabs the agent quietly, taking the hard drive for herself. Jack hears the movement downstairs and goes to check it out, spotting the dead agent. He goes for cover just as Nicole opens fire. After a short gunfight, he takes her down and quickly gets on the phone to Edgar, who helps him unlock the hard drive.
On it, Jack finds a series of detailed schematics and pilot instructions for a stealth bomber. Knowing Anderson is an experienced pilot, he gets on a conference call to Tony and Michelle, airing his belief that the man is trying to steal a stealth fighter....
Into the final act now as Jack speeds toward CTU. Tony talks to him over the phone, telling him that a stealth fighter took off from an airbase less than an hour ago and failed to report in at the registered time. Trying to determine possible targets, Michelle suddenly remembers that Keeler is landing in a few minutes. Marwan is going after Air Force One! Whilst she alerts the President, Jack is patched into the stealth fighter's recall frequency so that he can talk directly to Anderson. He tries to convince him not to go through with this but the man doesn't listen, cutting off all of his communication circuits....Keeler phones Vice President Charles Logan and warns him of what could be about to happen, urging him to stay the course if they go down. Logan is clearly nervous, but agrees. Mitch opens fire.....Air Force One is hit......Everyone is shocked.....
End episode.
Review: As I said, very very good, but not as great as FOX seemed to believe. One small matter I didn't touch on in the recap because it was somewhat overshadowed by other events in the hour was that it seems there is some sort of history between Buchanan and Michelle, and that she may have even been sleeping with him whilst she was still married to Tony. This and the small subplot with Edgar were nicely handled this episode and didn't detract too much from the main story which was definitely a highlight of the season so far. Special points to Sean Callery for another superb music track during the raid on Marwan's hideout by the way, which I hope you all noticed.

11pm-12am
This episode was awesome, to the point that it was hard to discern where it ranked in comparison with last week's. You see, last week was all a bit of nice filler stuff to get us to the end, whereas this week's was extremely tense and well handled drama for the whole hour, minus the shocking end. I'll have to give it the same rating I guess, but anyway, here's the recap:
CTU listens in as Air Force One rapidly loses altitude and eventually crashes. Moments later, Jack arrives and manages to get through to one of the secret service agents on board who survived. However, he has no idea of the President's status. In Washington, an old face returns after being absent for a whole season; Mike Novick - YAY! He briefs the vice-president on the situation and advises him that he should be sworn into office as soon as possible. Even if Keeler survives, it is unlikely he'll be in any state to run the country. Logan is clearly unnerved by the idea of stepping into the man's shoes.....
Back at CTU, Michelle reinforces that the capture of Marwan remains a top priority. For all they know he is planning something else. Meanwhile, Audrey tells Jack that Secretary Heller just called and wants him to take care of something personally. The Nuclear football, a case containing the codes and locations for the countries entire nuclear arsenal, was sucked out of air force one as it went down. However, they just picked up its transponder signal and the retrieval of the case is now a top priority. Jack asks about Paul and she tells him the bad news that it's likely he could lose the use of his legs. Although sympathetic, Jack reminds her she has a job to do and that she needs to try and put it out of her mind, to which she retorts: "That's your gift Jack. You can blocks things out. I can't do that."
Somewhere in the Mojave desert, a camper named Jason surveys his surroundings with a torch. He had been sleeping and could've sworn something woke him up. His wife tells him to ignore it when he suddenly notices a fire in the distance. He and his wife head over and spot the wreckage from Air Force One....At CTU, Buchanan senses some hostility from Tony and confronts him. It seems he has turned bitter towards him in the wake of his discovery that he and Michelle had been seeing each other. Buchanan reassures him that it never worked out and that he believes it was because she still has feelings for Tony.
Just then, CTU receives a live video feed from the crash site where rescue teams have just arrived. They find the President's son dead not far from his father. Keeler however seems to have survived. He is in critical condition and the workers rush to get him medical attention. Buchanan gives Logan the good news, advising that he invoke the 25th amendment and take control of the presidency given Keeler's current condition. Mike Novick informs him that he has already begun to set up the cabinet members for a vote which takes Logan by surprise. It seems he is not keen on things moving this quickly......Amongst the debris in the desert, Jason stumbles across a metal case with the presidential seal on it. There is a coded lock. This strikes a chord with the man who seems to remember reading an article in a magazine about this case not so long ago. He can't remember what it's called but he is well aware of the importance of its contents.
Acting quickly, he dials the police, knowing they will put him through to the right people. Indeed they do, as they patch him straight through to Tony over at CTU. He then makes a call to Jack, who is in the middle of trying to apologise to Audrey for the rather cold way in which he told her to deal with Paul's condition. He wants to make it clear that he does care about what happened, but right now he just doesn't have the time to express those feelings, what with all the lives on the line an all....Audrey seems to understand, but her feelings toward the man have clearly gone cold.
Newayz, Jack speaks to Jason and ensures he really does have the football as he claims, by asking him to describe it. Before he can continue, Jason spots headlights heading toward his position. Someone else is coming after the case. Jack realises Marwan must have the frequency to the transponder and instructs Jason on how to kill the signal. He then tells them to head for an old power station just north of their position and to wait for him there. Meanwhile, Marwan stops, noticing the signal has just died. He is suspicious that it cut out just as they were drawing closer and asks one of his men to scan for any cell phone signals in the area. Seconds later, Jack calls Jason and his wife Kelly, now on the run, telling them to take the battery out of their phone so that they can't be traced. They do so, but Marwan has just enough time to get a rough heading before they do. He checks the map and tells the others that they must be going for shelter at the power station. The race is on.........
Jason and Kelly reach the station and break in, smashing a window with a rock. Barely have they made it inside however, when Marwan's jeeps pull up outside. They warn Jack who tells them to take cover in the lower level of the station. He will find them there when he arrives. Marwan's men spot the fleeing campers and open fire, just as Jack's helicopter touches down outside, and he and another agent pile out. They barely move a few feet when the anonymous agent (as if we couldn't see this coming) gets plugged by one of Marwan's henchmen and Jack is forced into cover. Quickly, he calls Audrey and gets the latch code to the football. Knowing he may not get there in time, he has to make Marwan's job harder. Giving them the code to the case, he asks Jason and Kelly to divide up the contents of the football and to separate, thus rendering the football useless if one of them is found. It's hard for them to do, but they eventually agree and, kissing each other goodbye, the couple go their separate ways.......
Back outside, Jack finds an old tin can and places some of the other agent's bullets inside. He then fills the rest with shrubbery and sets it alight. Placing the can on the floor, he fires a few rounds in the direction of Marwan's man and starts to move. The fire in the can ignites the bullets, which start to go off, forcing the terrorist to duck, thinking it is Jack firing. Only Jack Bauer could give himself cover fire! He uses this opportunity to get behind the terrorist and to take him by surprise and shoot him. He then heads inside the plant.....
Jason continues to move stealthily through the building when all of a sudden he is cornered by one of Marwan's men and surrounded. Refusing to tell them where they can find the rest of the football, Marwan shoots him in the shoulder to try and get him to talk. Kelly hears this and watches from behind some piping as her husband is interrogated. Still refusing to answer, Marwan shoots him in the leg and proceeds to step on the wound. Kelly caves and reveals herself, producing the rest of the football for Marwan who orders his men to kill the couple. He then leaves, (making that classic villain mistake again of leaving and assuming all has gone to plan), which of course it hasn't.
Jack shows up in time to shoot the remaining terrorist and save the couple. He thanks them for their help, then goes after Marwan who is escaping in the jeeps. Jack's helicopter swoops down and blinds the driver of the lead jeep with its headlight, causing it to topple over an embankment. Jack shoots the driver and retrieves the football, only to realise some of the pages are missing......
In Washington, Mike Novick expresses concern to aide Walt Cummings about the VP's ability to lead the country. Nevertheless, the cabinet's vote is unanimous and, in front of a live press corps, he is sworn in.....Back in the desert, Audrey tells Jack that the missing pages contained warhead locations and activation codes. Now, although these begun to be changed after Air Force One went down, it will take another hour to complete as there are thousands of warheads. If Marwan gets a hold of just one, they will not be able to stop him.....
Review: As I said, tense and extremely good throughout, and better in places than 16 to be honest. The actors playing Jason and Kelly did a fantastic job, so well done again to the casting directors and of course to them. So, with the final countdown looming and Marwan likely to get ahold of a live nuke, Jack had better work fast if he's going to save the day again......I'm willing to bet the new President causes a few problems along the way too......
Rating: 4/5.

Stay tuned for 18!
