    Byebye Fingernails

My nails are going to suffer dreadfully this season I can tell. After tonight's two hours they're looking pretty ragged.

Is it just me or is the imagery so far just staggering? I keep having moments where I wonder about how awful it would be to be stuck in these situations. The shot of Derek kneeling for 15 minutes surrounded by the blood of the unlucky hostage before him is the scene that sticks with me tonight. Last night it was gutting to see Jack face President Palmer's body only feet away.

    *shudder*

Anyway, I'm still trying to catch my breath. The cold stares of the terrorists as they brutally shot two hostages while Slimy Selfish Bastard Logan pussyfooted around and made unreasonable demands on Buchanon who looked for all the world like he'd like to slug the president. He's not alone there.

I sort of knew young Derek would be chosen as a hostage but it was really riveting the way the whole scenario played out. I knew Jack would save him and the hostages somehow but for the life of me I couldn't see how he would do it. But he did of course.

Loved Chloe tonight. I say that more and more because I love that she's a part of this show. I wonder if she was meant to just be a bit part but she rocked so hard they expanded her role. Whatever happened I'm just glad she's there. She brings a level of unintentional humour to the show that just... works. You know?

I still hate Logan. I think he's a dick. My daughter thinks the Russian president looks like Jack Bristow. And the mole at the president's retreat - Walt? I think that's his name... Still trying to suss him out. Why is he a part of all this? Is he just a highly placed lackey? That would be my guess. He'll end up caught and killed I bet.

And is Geraint Wyn Davies the top of the bad guy chain? He seems to be so far but as we all know (Amador anyone?) there always seems to be an even bigger fish.

What else... Argh this is so hard with two hours to process :) But I'M NOT COMPLAINING :)

Ohhhh Sean Astin appeared tonight as Lynn McGill. I'm reserving judgement on him. First impression was he's a beaurocratic prick, but he did sort of help Jack save the hostages. And he was humble about it. I think he's just socially inept like Chloe.

I'm going to sum up quickly what happened because I'm really kind of out of the recap biz (hint hint - anyone interested pop me an email) - Russian terrorists took over an airport and demanded Logan not go through with the signing of an historical arms treaty with the russian president. Jack managed to position himself inside so he could pass on intel to CTU for a rescue. But after his girlfriend's son became one of the hostages and was about to be executed, he had to give himself up to save his life. Logan's wife was still convinced Palmer was trying to warn her so she cheekily talked her way into a room with transcripts of her phone calls and found Palmer's call which she cunningly hid in her bra. The presidential mole discovered this and chloroformed her and took it back. Logan carried on whining about this "Hallmark of his Presidency" until I wanted to poke his eyeballs out and refused to stop the signing of the treaty.

Jack managed to communicate to CTU that he was giving them intel under duress and this was discovered because the new top dog at CTU is an uber-nerd who figured it out. The terrorists all died in a ripper flanking maneuver led by Calm, Cool Curtis. But just before it all went down Jack saw the lead terrorist pass some kind of card to one of the hostages who must have been a plant. Upon closer scrutiny this fake hostage was none other than Badger from "Firefly." :) Sad little king of a sad little hill. No one but a Browncoat will get that. Anyway he slipped away just before Jack was taken into custody to answer the charges he was involved in the hits on Palmer and Tony and Michelle.

We followed Badger as he went into some kind of bunker that held a bunch of canisters which they then began to load. So my guess is the whole hostage thing was a diversion maybe? Had to be. Nick Knight didn't seem all that upset that the hostages were saved. But if it was a diversion, wtf was the point? The card came from the baggage guy who ate the cyanide. Why couldn't Badger just pop into the baggage guy's office and get the card from where ever he had it hidden?

    Ahh well wait and see.

Excellent shows again tonight. It's going to be a long wait til Monday :)

one problem with the episode last night: why did the bad guys feel the need to do the card handoff right smack in the middle of the hostage-taking scenario?

i mean, if getting the card was so important, why draw so much attention to yourself -- and make removal of the card from the airport exponentially more difficult -- by staging a hostage-taking at the very moment you're trying to remove pick up the card?

the handoff really was absurdly complex. first the bad guys stage hostage-taking; then they plant mole among hostages; locate the hidden card; slip the card to the mole lurking among the hostages; hope that the mole is able to eventually get out of the airport which is now surrounded by bad guys...

why make it so difficult to get the card out of the airport? why not just send someone into the airport to quietly pick up the card?

I wondered that too. I can only guess that maybe they did think the hostage taking would make spineless Logan back down on the treaty. Or maybe they were tricked into "martyring" themselves by Nick Knight - they possibly may have thought the hostage sitch was really to stop the treaty.

    Or who knows.

very true on their intentions (and whether or not it was a trick of some other sort such as the martyrdom theory)...i guess we'll just have to wait and see!

Melia, you're great. We keep referring to the guy in the yellow tie as Badger, too. It's funny how many actors Firefly and 24 share.
