A traitor and a disgrace...
Man oh man do I ever know how Chloe felt when she played the recording only to find there was nothing but static ("on Channel Z..." - sorry B-52 moment.) I, too, have experienced that heart-pounding moment when so much is counting on your work and when the time comes to unveil or display the fruits of your labour, something has cocked it up. Your cheeks flush with a sudden onslaught of blood rushing to them in embarassment. Your palms become slick with sweat and you have trouble catching your breath. You can literally hear your heart pound and your brain pretty much implodes as it tries to simultaneously find out what happened and/or look for someone nearby to blame for the mistake. :)
Poor Chloe.
Stupid Miles.
So a teleconference has been setup with some big names in order to garner support for the recorded evidence including someone from the justice department who can then make recommendations for impeachment proceedings. This does not sit well with Jack. "What about an arrest warrant?" he snaps at Buchanan. Bill tells him that no one in their right mind would attempt to arrest a sitting president. Impeachment first, criminal trial later.
Before the conference call begins Chloe tests the recording only to discover the aforementioned static and all that entails emotion-wise for the poor girl. Ooo Jack is livid. Eventually they work out that it was Miles who erased the recording and Jack stalks out of the conference room to get him - as he's conveniently trying to leave the floor.
Jack flings him against a wall and grabs him by the throat, squeezing with every ounce of his considerable strength. "You son of a bitch." he hisses through clenched teeth. Soon though, Karen orders Jack to stand down and confronts Miles, asking where he's going. Miles tells her he's been transferred. It doesn't take Jack long to figure out Miles is off to the White House now.
Betrayed, Karen asks how Miles could do it. I forget what he said, but it resulted in a pretty good bitchslap in front of the entire office. I enjoyed that very much. I would have enjoyed it more had she gunned him down in cold blood but you can't have everything.
Back in the conference room, Karen receives a call from Logan and he oh-so-innocently asks what the deal is with the teleconference CTU had set up. She tells him it's been cancelled and he breathes a sigh of relief. Then he tells her that he's rescinding his order to arrest Jack. Puzzled, Karen asks Jack what Logan has to gain by letting Jack go. But Jack knows that now he's on his own with no presidential support. He's a sitting duck for assassination :(
Buchanan burst in the room to tell everyone that Bierko has, of course, escaped (we knew he would.) The one remaining agent left alive after the escape fills CTU in on what happened. He overheard Bierko mention another canister of nerve gas. Sure enough we switch to Bierko and his merry band of thugs as they retrieve a reserve canister.
Back at the retreat, Martha Logan contemplates suicide - she's got the pills stuck to her lips until she realizes it would be stupid - and then she spots Aaron's phone on the mantel. She gives it to her guard and asks him to return it to Aaron. And then we see Aaron himself, mighty, stoic hero of the Secret Service, loyal to Palmer, trustworthy and steadfast in his quiet manner. He is tied to a chair, bruised and bloody from obvious torture. *sniffle*
In walks Logan who has some cajones to try and offer Aaron a deal. He tells Aaron the recording no longer exists - not that it never did, but that it is no more - and he wants to know if he can count on Aaron to remain with the Secret Service. He actually acts like he's doing Aaron a favour and that Aaron will fall to his knees and thank Logan for giving him a second chance. But not our Aaron. Ohhh no. Aaron looks him square in the eye and tells him he's a traitor and disgrace to the office. And then he called him "Charles." Not "Mr. President." The ultimate in disrespect from a Secret Service agent.
Aaron, I love you.
Unfortunately, this probably means that Logan will okay Aaron's death. He leaves the room with another agent/lackey in tow who reminds Logan that Aaron is loyal to Palmer. With a look he tacitly gives the go ahead for this lackey to take Aaron out. But we don't see it. I'm sure that will spark the rumours that he lives and deep down I hope he does too. But for what it's worth, I feel like Aaron deserves hero status right alongside Jack Bauer.
After Logan leaves the room, he phones Graham, explaining that everything is contained and probably looking for a pat on the back from Graham. Because we all know Logan needs constant validation. Mike Novick interrupts the call though to tell Logan of Bierko's escape.
At CTU, Buchanan, Jack, Karen and Chloe confab about ways to find Bierko. Buchanan suggests grilling Henderson some more. Jack is adamant Henderson won't give anything else up. he knows him too well. Karen says he'd probably talk if a deal was on the table but Jack is also against that idea. But Buchanan plays the "What would David Do?" card - lives of many greater than the lives of one etc. And Jack agrees to present the deal to Henderson.
Henderson is scared though. Immunity from Logan means nothing to him. He's afraid of Graham. He tells Jack the recording was his immunity and now that it's gone he's a dead man. He lets on that there are bigger people behind Logan but refuses to say who. He says the deal he'll make is that he disappears, with his wife, and Jack is to be the one to set it up. If Jack agrees, then he will help Jack find Bierko. Reluctantly, jack does but the deal is Henderson gets Jack Bierko's head on a plate. I kind of think Jack meant that literally :)
Coming back from commercial and YAY I was wrong. Aaron's alive still. Martha's hanging out in the stables having a smoke when she sees a car pull up. An agent gets out with a gun drawn and disappears. When he comes back, he's leading Aaron towards the trunk of the car which is lined with a tarp. He's going to shoot Aaron. Martha interrupts him though and as the agent struggles with indecision on whether to shoot the First Lady, Aaron takes advantage of the moment and knocks him down. The gun he's carrying flies towards Martha and just as the agent grabs a crowbar to mash Aaron's brains in, Martha shoots him. She shot the agent. GO MARTHA!!!
So Henderson gives up about 14 names that he thinks Bierko will try to contact and Chloe gets a hit on one of them. A man named Joshua Molina. Henderson tells Jack that he won't break and the only way to get the info out of Molina is for Henderson to go in and get the intel himself. Of course. After a bit of dancing around the issue Jack relents.
They arrive at Molina's place and Jack gives Henderson 10 minutes to get the goods. As he goes in, Jack shimmies up a telephone pole or something and sticks a listening device on a skylight in Molina's apartment. After Henderson passes through more security than an airport terminal, he immediately blows the whistle on the agents waiting outside. he tells Molina to crash his system and they need to get out of there. Irritated, Jack gives the order for the tact team to bust in and they take down Molina with a shot to the hip (and Curtis gets shot in the arm :( ) and recaptures Henderson who tells Jack that he blew it. He was about to get Molina to drop his Phoenix firewall (I could have used one of those on my website that got hacked last week btw) so CTU could access the info.
But it doesn't matter because Chloe got through and decrypted the info that leads Jack to Bierko's target: a Russian submarine docked at the Port of Los Angeles that, as part of the treaty Logan signed, is in town for a techonology trade. This sub includes a slew of nuclear warheads. Ruh-roh.
Before we get to that, we head back to the stables at the retreat. Aaron and Martha share a tender moment (I'm starting to think Aaron is sort of crushing on Martha. She might be a little too. He's everything she wishes her husband would be you know) as they discuss what they need to do next. As she gently wipes the blood from his face, he tells her she needs to get back to the residence and find Novick to tell him everything. He'll hide the agent's body. He wants Novick to meet him in the stables and hopefully get his help to get out of there so he can lay low. Martha agrees to do what he asks. Awwww.. I'm so happy he lives.
Back to Jack... Once Chloe tells Jack what the target is he asks to speak to the ranking officer in charge there. He warns the officer that terrorists have targeted the ship. As the officer removes a weapon from a case, Jack takes Henderson with him by chopper to the sub. Henderson doesn't want to go obviously. He thought his getting the intel on the sub would be enough but oh no. Jack is holding him to the Head on a Plate deal.
As the officer goes topside to check the sub, Bierko stands above a hatch and shoots him. Bierko and his men then don gas masks, drop their canister of nerve gas down the hatch and murder everyone aboard.
Now they control the submarine and it's missiles. Oh dear.
And that's it for this week folks. And next week is the two-hour grand finale for the season. I'm sort of dreading it. I have to know what happens but I don't want it to be over you know?

Yeah, Karen and Bill would make a very cute couple. Maybe the next Tony/Michelle? I thought it was a pretty good episode tonight, if not somewhat predictable. Here are my comments on it.
- The crazy sexual harrassee and the suspicious blonde chick were nowhere to be seen. I liked how Jack just slid right in and started giving orders. You would have thought that would have garnered some glances from those gals.
- Was anyone else waiting for the blonde to come running up to Miles, with a "I'm coming with you Miles, I love you!"?
- Audrey has officially broken the clinic curse. Not bad, getting up and reporting for duty two hours after having half your blood drained.
- Nice pad Molina had. What happens when the Jehovah Witnesses stop by? Are they vaporized?
- How many random international terrorist/arms dealers/information suppliers are there in the greater LA area? This is the second one this season (guy shot by Russian girl). And shouldn't Henderson have told Jack what he was up to? At least to avoid getting shot. He knew he was not going to escape. I guess they needed that extra moment of drama. Personally Iwould not have taken HEnderson's "You will never break him" statements a little lightly. Molina has never met Jack.
- After going through the whole bottle of pills, Martha seemed to function pretty well. Although during the commercial break, I was second guessing what I saw and thought maybe she had shot Aaron, also. And that touching look of love between them.... Although, I could hear Aaron thinking, "You f&^&king BITCH!", when she said she was going to let Logan get away with it.
- Who else thought Jack was about to plant a bullet in Chloe's thigh when Jack learned about the tape? And waht about that look she gave to Jack (I don't think he saw it) when they learned about the Sub. I thought something was about to come out.
- And the sub. I had to shake my head at this whole plot development. So, the Red October just happens to be tied up to a PUBLIC dock on the LA waterfront during everything that's happened? How many nuclear missles were on the sub? They tied it up at a public dock? They can't tell someone's on top of the sub without opening the hatch? You can't even steer a fishing boat within a 100 yards of run of the mill destroyer in real life with out a squad of security coming after you. Wouldn't it have been safer at Point McGoo? Also, doesn't nerve gas affect the skin also?
- And in addition to having the plan to attack Russia, and back up plans to attack the Russian convoy, a US hospital, CTU, and the propane plant, Bierko now has a squad of submarine experts ready to go after this target also. This man may be the single most productive terrorist the world has ever seen. Al Queda would dream to be this good. What are his plans after this one?
- Contrary to what Henderson thinks, i really do think Jack could "touch" those people. I think he could touch Graham in a very bad way.
- And what a great puppetmaster he is, just sitting around getting drunk, totally out of touch with what's going on. THis guy knew when Chloe called Karen and now Logan calls and he's like, "Oh, you're still alive?".
- Matha's got gun, Whole world's just begun... (not sure if those are the right lyrics from Aerosmith)
- Anybody think MIles will wind being shot by Logan as "loose end"?

Those warheads aren't nuclear. As I recall, that point was made specifically, but one missile could "take out a few city blocks".
Okay, only a few city blocks. No big deal then.
I forgot about the scene where Chloe finally encounters a computer she can't break into! Is this a first?
Now Dave Barry (read his blog from last night's episode)suspects Chloe knows something, also. Maybe I'm not crazy.
Bierko: How could he escape? Only CTU knew where he was, he was not awake for several hours. If they offer you free phone calls as a prisoner at CTU, then his escape seems realistic. If not, there must be a mole.
Graham: He must be really drunk now. Did you notice that Logan was obviously informed about Bierko's escape before Graham was? (Or did they plan it as well?)
Martha: I remember her being drunken about an hour ago. She recovered very fast.
Submarine: CTU knows that Bierko has another gas canister. Why didn't Jack tell the officer in the submarine about this??? It was quite obvious what that plan was. I am sure that the crew has gas masks and full body protection on board. Yes, VX nerve gas gets usually absorbed by the skin, but it did not harm Jack, so this is special...

In the peviious hour, Bierko had a suspicious glance with the driver.
Also, great episode. I was chanting Bitchslap and jumped up when Karen did it! Woooo!

After last night, all I can say is C"MON!!! Don't even try to figure it out, people. Logic has gone out the window. If I hadn't already invested 5 months watching it, hoping it would all make sense eventually...........
The scene where Henderson goes through a full body scan to get inside the house of one of the many guys you can call up anytime, day or night, to get top secret codes, but Jack just pops the skylight open ???
They never played the tape????
My head is going to explode.
That was no bitchslap, people! It was as dainty as they come, and I for one was hoping for a knuckle sandwich.
I agree that Bierko has some awfully impressive plans B, C and D up his sleeve. These cansiters were meant for Moscow, remember? Sheesh, this guy covers his bases mighty well.
Okay, we HAVE to be surprised next week, because I really thought there would be something last night. Dunno what, just a nice twist. Russian sub, pheh, no big deal. I want to know who the really, truly, uber, super, double-secret bad guy/gal is. Do we know him/her? Please not Chloe. And not someone we're not invested in, like the CTU eye candy brigade. That doesn't leave many choices, but that's why I'm not a scriptwriter.
so yeah, a pretty good ep.
i was a little deflated when Miles was slapped though. i mean he deserved a bullet, or a least more jack strangling.
and i cannot believe jack was trusting Henderson!! that two-faced double-crossing fake!!!
well, i am anxious for the finale. any predictions as to the end of the show? and when do we get to kill these masterminds that "can't be touched"?? we need more info on them.
JOEY D.i am so eurprised sometimes as how the writers goof-first they allow jack to turn over the tape to cleo-and then he does not warn the capitan about the gas-these are no brainers.
Securing the tape was not only the single most important thing CTU had to do after Jack brought it there but also the most basic type of job it was. Why didn' they surround the tape with like five security guards so that nobody ever could get even come close to doing anything about it. Was that that importnat? Hell yes! They dragged on this fetch the tape and lose it and fetch it again .. episodes for about fives weeks or so and was this "oops" the end os the story? OK, I still love this show. All other shows are not even worth discussing to me. But, hmm.......
I was thinking about this a lot last night, how there seems to be a groundswell of frustration over the illogical events over the past 5-6 episodes. It occurred to me that looking back on the season, most of it has been illogical, but until we got close to the end, I could always come up with sensical ways for the situations to end. Now that we are 2 hours from the end, I realize that most of these plotlines are not going to be tied up. The writers keep adding new stuff that creates more questions on top of the things I am already heavily questioning.
So, I definitely agree that the writers need to script things out for the entire season. There's no reason why the story line should be in the state it is this close to the end. There is no hint of suspense or mystery left, except that we just want to see how the writers will end the silly mess this season has become. You can't really care about ANYONE anymore, because you'll just be frustrated.
There was a great sense of mystery early in the season. We watched every detail (still are) hoping that it would tell us something, or we could look back and go "Aha! That's why so-and-so did that...". There has been none of that. Those things we kept waiting to go "Aha" over have been left hanging and new stuff added on that does nothing to help explain the previous situations. Compare this to "Lost" or "Alias" where everything that happens in each episode is vital to the future episodes. You have to remember what occurred. Lately with "24", it's like the writers are hoping we DON'T remember what happened in any episode except the last one.
I love the show, but it needs to tighten up and avoid going in circles like this season is ending.
mike13
I agree that the show has lost all touch with reality. I have watched every episode since the series premier and I have not felt that the writers have lost control of a script like they have this season. They tried to get too shocking and too high stakes that the show has lost all suspense, and now I just want to see how they will end this lame, unrealistic season. The sad thing is that this season started off better than any before, but the turning point came when they made the President the person behind everything. Since then they have been struggling to tie everything together and leave the audience on the edge of their seat. What's next, Bower turns out to be the evil genius behind everything? Bottom line is they need to write the script for the entire season before filming.
P.S. Remember when Bower broke his rib earlier in the day. Wow, he heals fast!
>The sad thing is that this season started off better than any before, but the turning point came when they made the President the person behind everything. <
This season DID start off better, more shocking than any other. I remember when we found out Logan was behind it all, at first there was excitement and shock, but then we seemed to question how they would stretch it out for 6 or 7 more episodes. They added the evil puppetmasters, spent 4 episodes chasing the tape, and now we're back to Bierko and evil plot#113. Seriously, can someone count how many of Bierko's henchmen, including the guys behind the airport hostage-standoff have been killed so far? I'm guessing between that, the Russian convoy battle, the propane plant, 1 at CTU, and 2 at the hospital, at least 25 - 30. And now he has even more men to take the Red October!
It seems like it would be pretty easy to be locked in a room over the weekend with your writing buddies and figure out the plot. Then spread it over 24 episodes, adding subplots and characters, but always keeping on course and building to the climax when all the subplots and loose ends come together. This is the pleasure of reading a good book. Towards the end, you get a sense of how it will tie everything together and you can't put it down as you race to the end. I just don't get that feeling on 24 now. I have no idea how it will end next week. I am scared I'll just be confused, spin into further disbelief, and be left asking questions all off season.
Remember in Season 2 when Jack got over his heroin addiction in a half day? Or season 1 when they sliced him open to torture him? C'mon, a broken rib is only a minor inconvienence for an episode or two.
AND WHERE IS WAYNE ??????????
mike13
How was Bierko able to escape anyway? Sure, he had a suspicous exchange of nodds with someone in that vehicle that was supposed to give him a ride to the "division", but the next time we heard about him, he was already gone without much explanation. And then well within an hour, he was already knocking on the hatch of the Russian sub. This beggs so many questions -- who knew about this beforehand? Why was it that nobody tried to chase/track him down after the escape? Chloe always seems able to see anything anywhere through the sattelite instantly. Didn't it occur to anyone at CTU to do something similar to monitor the situation about Bierko? Also: the curfew was still on, and I guess people were not suppsued to be on the stree traveling to a port where a Russian sub was staying to say the least. And there should be a bunch of check points imposed by the US military, and obvously none of them were any trouble to Bierko. And there's an even bigger question. If there's an armed Russian sub in the US, it should be heavily gurded by US military/US navy. Nobody can just walk in there and knock on the hatch. But apparently that's what Bierko was able to do even carrying the canister. OK, now let's sit back and see how the writers will explain all these things while pulling offf a major shocker with only the two episodes left..
This plot is going kind of wacky. I half expect them to decide that the Graham character and his board of shadowy figures exist only in Logan's mind because he's batshit crazy...
Okay if that really happens, I absolutely give up. All I want to see is Aaron and Martha driving off into the sunset, Chloe with a change of clothes, and LOGAN's head on a plate!
That kinda makes sense. You know, "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth"..
>I half expect them to decide that the Graham character and his board of shadowy figures exist only in Logan's mind because he's batshit crazy...<
That would actually be cool twist. It would also make better sense than Graham and his gang actually existing in a closed off room with no computers, TV, ect, and living through their little earheld cell phones while they plot to rule the world.
Wouldn't it be cool scene to have Logan talking to them (or thinking he is) and Mike walks in. At first he wonders why Logan is talking to himself, then he hears Logan answer himself in Graham's voice. Split personality. A few scenes later, a doctor comes out of the room they are holding Logan in. Jack, Mike, the VP, Aaron, Audrey, Martha, and Karen gather around. MIles is locked up down the hall. The doctor begins the whole opening lines from the speech in Psycho.
Jack: Can the President tell us why he did it?
Dr. : Yes and no. The President as we knew him no longer exists. He barely existed to begin with.
>Jack squeezes his throat, shoves him against the wall<
Jack: What the hell are you talking about? He's not getting off on some insanity plea!
Dr. (after Bill pulls Jack off): Mr. Bauer, you can hear the story, he'll tell you why he did it. He's proud of what he did. But it won't be Logan telling you. He no longer exists. Graham has taken over.
>Mike immediately hands Martha a bottle of pills<
Dr.: You see, Logan's mind began to crack after the former President's plane was shot down last year. He realized he was inferior and weak. His worst nightmare. He couldn't take it. So, he created Graham, a bald, bourbon drinking, fearless patriot. The pressure of his job caused "Graham" to come out more and more, until "Logan" became the weaker personality. He was hardly ever all "Logan" at the end, but he WAS often all "Graham".
Mike: So what the hell's been going on all day?
>Logan curled up with a blanket. Light reflecting off water plays against the walls of his padded room<
Logan (speaking in Graham's voice): They think I'M crazy? It was that weakling Logan's fault. He married that crazy b#$&h that brought everything down. I couldn't do everything for him. But things are better now that he's out of the way. Now I can run this country my way. Yes sir, as soon as they let me out of here, I'm putting my earpiece back in and pouring a drink. Then American will take over the world! But I'll show them. This time I won't even hurt a fly doing it.
And so ends season 5. Or maybe not. mike13
I like all these ideas posted here. Yet another question is what Beirko will do now that he's got the control of the sub. I don't know the technical details about that sub, but no submarine can launch missiles when it's floating around a dock. So the first thing they have to do is to go under water and create safe distance for the launch. But I think US airforce can take out the sub at a moments's notice. But the question is, if the sub is still considered to belong to Russia, US wouldn't be able to attack it without Russian permission. Then, where's the Russian Prez, who survived the terrorist attack on his way to the airport thanks to our hero, Aaron? Or maybe Logan simply doesn't care, because Logan/Garaham and co. want to start a real war. But all these decisions have to be made very quickly, given Bierko's super efficiency. He really shouldn't have bothered to come to US in order to bring terrorism inside Russia, considering his incredibe efficiency/organization power. Anyway, will see.
was Martha named after the first, first lady?
Pierce and Buchannan were Presidents... however there were no presidents named Bauer... although if you play Euchre the "bower" is the highest card and it is the Jack of the suit that is the trump card...
besides just being a bitch, can someone tell me why miles was so sympathetic to logan? i don't get it.
