When Fiction Meets Reality
Fanfiction by Moody
Author's Notes: This is a story taking Kiefer's life as we know it, all of it and blending it in with Jack's life as we know it. The setting is pre-season 1, Jack is not yet Special Agent in Charge at CTU Los Angeles, but he's applied for the job and Chapelle is there to evaluate him as a final stage in the application. If Chapelle gives his approval, Jack will become Special Agent in Charge.
The events leading Kiefer to CTU are real ones, but blown out of proportion for the sake of bringing CTU into this. They took place shortly before the start of season 4 when a Muslim group aired threats against Kiefer and 24 because of the fact a Turkish family was portrayed as a terrorist cell. I took those threats and blew them out of proportion to make this story what it is, Reality blending in with Fiction.
Jack Bauer felt like shit. He had been called into the office by District Director Ryan Chapelle moments before he would've hit the sack after a long stakeout which had proven to be a wild goose chase. He was pissed when the information proved incorrect and he had driven home, intent on getting a few hours in the sack before going back to work to file his report. But Chapelle had caught him in the nick of time and had ordered him in at once.
Jack was seated in the man's office on the first floor and he knew from the look on Chapelle's face that he was not going to like this conversation in the least.
"I hope you're happy with yourself Special Agent Bauer." Chapelle snapped the moment he sat down. "You just fucked up 4 months worth of investigation. What the hell were you thinking barging in there without a warrant?"
"I thought- ”
"What?" Chapelle interrupted him. "What were you thinking Bauer?"
The contempt drooped off him. He didn't like men like Jack Bauer. He wanted his men to follow rules, to play by the book. The only book Bauer played by was probably his daughter's scrapbook. He hated his guts and he hated the man's continuous insubordination even more. But this time he had gone too far. He would pay for his mistake.
"I thought we could get him to give up the information if we put enough pressure on him." Jack replied quickly now that his boss wasn't cutting him off.
"Well obviously you thought wrong. His lawyers busted through my door so fast I didn't even have time to call up his file. They walked him out of here less than five minutes after you hauled him in Bauer. Everything we've worked for over the past 4 months went down the drain because you didn't wait for the warrant. We've got nothing on him Bauer. Not a goddamned thing." Chapelle added, resting his hands on his hips. "All because of you."
Jack remained silent. He didn't have an answer for this. He made a mistake but he was sure he would find evidence, all he needed was some time to sift through the information they had on him and they would be able to connect one of LA's most prominent politicians to a mob-related group of terrorists. Maybe he moved too fast, but he honestly thought the man would sing like a bird if he felt he was in danger of losing face. But his mistake couldn't have come at a worse time.
District Director Chapelle was here to observe him. He had applied for the position of Special Agent in Charge six months ago and had gone through a number of interview and evaluations. Now Chapelle was here to monitor his work and he managed to botch up an investigation right under his nose. He would kick himself if given half a chance. If the position was given to someone else because of this, he would be damn pissed.
"I'm pulling you off the case Bauer." Chapelle said after a moment of silence.
Jack's head shot up and he met Ryan's eyes.
"I don't want you involved in this anymore. If I find you talking to anyone about it or I see you as much as looking at a single file, you're out of here."
"But-"
"No buts Bauer, we might be able to salvage some of the investigation, but I'm not going to have you around to mess it up again. You'll find your new assignment on your desk." Ryan continued. "You're dismissed."
Jack got up and left the office, cursing himself and Ryan on his way down the metal stairs. His eyes met Nina's and she cast him a smile, hoping to counter the effect of Ryan's raving speech. Jack went to his desk and dropped into his chair after what he hung his head shaking it for a moment. The soft touch on his shoulder pulled him out of his reverie.
"You okay?" Nina asked.
"No I'm not." Jack sighed in response.
"Well maybe this will make you feel better." Nina replied, opening the folder she had with her, "We found something interesting on Laderman and I think-"
"Chapelle just pulled me off the case." Jack sighed, stopping Nina from showing him the information.
"He did what?" Nina exclaimed, "Why?"
"Isn't it obvious? I fucked up."
"Oh hell Jack, you didn't know he had a team of six lawyers standing by."
"No, but I did know we needed that warrant and I should've known better than to go after him without it."
"Shit happens Jack."
"Yeah, it just did. Dammit we had him!" Jack cursed quietly.
The deep sigh translated how he really felt about it.
"Now what?"
"He gave me a new assignment." Jack sighed again, pointing to the folder on his desk.
He hadn't opened it yet.
"Probably something shitty just to rub my face in it."
"You don't know that."
"You didn't see the look on his face when he told me my new assignment was on my desk." He glanced up to the office. "Pure glee."
"He'll come off it."
"I hope. Otherwise I can kiss that office goodbye."
"Well, if you need anything for that new assignment, just give me a holler."
"Yeah thanks."
Jack sighed again and picked up the folder Ryan had dropped on his desk. Nina walked back to her station and continued on her tasks.
With another sigh, Jack opened the folder and his eyes scanned the first page.
"What?" he exclaimed, "You have got to be kidding."
He lifted the first page and the picture underneath confirmed what he thought he'd read.
"Oh for fuck's sake." Jack snapped, tossing the folder on his desk again. Another deep sigh tore through him as his arm dropped back to the desk, landing inches short of the folder he had just tossed on it.
"What's wrong Jack?" Nina called from her station.
"This has got to be a joke." Jack exclaimed. His face was a mixture of disbelief and shock. "You're not gonna believe this." he added, meeting Nina's eyes.
"What? What is it Jack?" Nina asked, worried now. She got up and came back over to his station and Jack simply pushed the folder towards her. She opened it and scanned the first page like Jack had done, then lifted it and had a long look at the picture underneath.
"He's got you on bodyguard duty?" she asked, unwilling to believe it. "This is a joke Jack, I'm sure it is."
"It better be. I'll be damned if I'm gonna baby-sit some Hollywood schmuck because he stepped on one too many toes."
"Hollywood schmuck?" Nina asked.
"You think this guy is a schmuck? Where have you been the past three years? This guy is the hottest actor in Hollywood at the moment."
"Ask Chapelle to swap assignments." Jack growled. "I'll be damned if I'm gonna baby-sit that wannabe."
"Oh come on Jack, you're kidding right."
"Nina please, the guy couldn't act if his life depended on it. He's running around like a headless chicken but at a snap of his fingers, all the pieces of the puzzle just fall together, and all of that in less than an hour. He's making us look like we're stupid because we can't crack a case in 24 hours like he does.I'll be damned if I'm going to baby-sit him."
"Come on Jack, he's hot and he's good."
"You can have him."
"I wish." Nina chuckled.
Just then Chapelle came down the stairs and Jack pushed up, grabbing the file from his desk and he hurried after him.
"Ryan." Jack called but Chapelle ignored him and continued on his way. "Mister Chapelle … sir…"
This time, Chapelle stopped and turned, hands on his hips when he saw Jack coming with the file.
"This is a joke right?" Jack asked, raising the folder. "You're pulling me off a high priority investigation to play bodyguard?"
"No Jack, I didn't pull you off that investigation, you pulled yourself off when you barged through the man's door without a warrant."
He paused, making sure Jack had plenty of time to assimilate the information, sometimes he just didn't get it. "You have your new orders."
Chapelle turned and walked away, leaving Jack baffled and angry.
He went back to his desk, slammed the file down on top of it and dropped back into his chair with a heavy sigh. He couldn't believe he was being pulled off a high priority investigation, an ongoing investigation, for this crap.
'Dammit' he snapped to himself. You just had to fuck up, didn't you.'
He let out another sigh and shoved the file away from him. This was his worst nightmare. It was bad enough his daughter had her room full of posters of this guy, now he was going to have to stay on him 24/7.
'God, could life get any worse?' Just as that thought crawled through his mind, Chapelle called out to him.
"Heads up Bauer. Your man is coming through security."
"Just what I needed." Jack sighed as he pushed up.
Chapelle met the man at the door, shaking hands and welcoming him to CTU.
"I've assigned Special Agent Bauer to your case." Chapelle explained, pointing to Jack who stood a step away.
Jack took a small step forward and extended his hand for the other to shake it.
"Pleased to meet you, I'm Kiefer Sutherland."
