When Fiction Meets Reality - Pt. 17

Jack hurried down the stairs again, sent Tony up and went out with the forensic team. They took their car since all of their equipment was in there and the apartment they would be searching was down the block. They parked in front of the building and one of the men gave Jack a pair of gloves he put on before getting out of the car. He went in first, drawing his gun and slipping the key in the lock with his left hand. He eased into the apartment, not knowing what he was going to find, but the place was empty and clear, so he called the men in and they broke out their equipment. Jack found the phone where Brian had told him it would be and he got one of the men to dust it for prints first. He was sure they'd only get Brian's prints, but one could never know if they got lucky. So he waited patiently for the man to be done after what he sprayed the phone and handed it back to Jack. Jack used it to call Nina.
"Nina, it's me." Jack said as soon as she picked up.
"I'm calling you with the phone Brian Lettis was given."

"Okay, Jamey's on her way in, but I'll start working on it and hand it over to her when she gets here. Just leave the line open for a moment, I'll call you on your cell when I'm ready."

    "Good."
Jack put the phone down on the table and watched the men as they started going through the apartment. The first areas they checked were doorknobs and frames, but they would go over the entire apartment and it would take them hours.
"If you need help, I can call in a second team." Jack said after a moment.

"We're the only ones on stand-by over the weekend."

"That's what I mean, if you need help, I can call a second team in to help you out."

"I won't say no to that."

Jack's phone started buzzing just then and he picked it up.
    "Bauer."

"Bauer, this is Chapelle. What's going on?"

"I just arrived at the suspect's apartment with the forensic team sir," Jack replied, forcing himself to stay professional, "I'm waiting for the other team to arrive but I'd like to make a request for a second forensic team to be dispatched here, there's a lot to go over."

"Any information we can work with?"

"Nothing yet, but we just got here, the suspect is en route to CTU and Nina will question him, I gave her everything I had."

    "Okay, I'll call Nina."

"Can you send a second forensic team to this address and a team to watch the Sutherland apartment sir?"

    "What's the address?" Chapelle sighed.
    Jack gave it to him.
"And why do you need a team to watch Sutherland's apartment?"

"Because he wants to go visit his daughter, I don't want to walk into a trap when we get back."

    "Consider it done."

"Thank you sir." Jack replied and hung up.
"Your secondary team will be coming in soon." Jack said to the first man.
His phone was already buzzing again and he answered it.
    "Bauer."

"It's Nina, I've got everything I need with the other phone, forensics can have it."
"I've put a deviation on it, so next time it'll ring, it'll be transferred to my computer."

    "Great, thanks Nina."

    "Do you need anything else?"

"An ETA on that team you sent to stay with the forensic guys."

    "Hang on."
He got some waiting music while Nina checked in with the team.
    "ETA 7 minutes."

    "Okay thanks. About Lettis."

    "What about him?"

"I want you to press him. Throw him around a bit and squeeze him dry, I don't want to miss a step."
"Make sure he's not connected to Bonney and check the security tapes to match him to the drops."
"He's scared of taking the fall on his own. I told him he's part of a conspiracy to commit murder so I want you to squeeze him hard Nina. If he knows something, he has to give it up."

"I'm on top of it Jack, don't worry."

"And keep me posted as soon as you have something we can work with."

    "Will do."

She hung up and Jack handed the cellphone to one of the men who placed it inside an evidence bag. Next he called Tony to let him know he'd be back in about ten minutes and to be ready when he got there. The CTU agents got there at about the time Nina said they would and Jack took them into the apartment, instructing them on what they would be doing there and letting them know another forensic team was on the way as well. In case of trouble, they could always call him, Nina or Chapelle.
Once Jack was sure all angles were covered, he hurried back to Kiefer's place, Molly was still waiting to go for that walk. He called to them the moment he reached the door and Molly was at his foot less than five seconds later. He petted her on the head and she jumped at him, sensing they were going to go outside in a minute. Kiefer handed him the leash and he hooked it back up while handing his keys to Tony.

"We'll take my car, follow me while I walk her."

"Shouldn't we wait for you to come back?" Kiefer asked.

    "We're taking her with us."

    "Any particular reason?"

"Don't you think she's entitled to spend some time with you too?"

"Yeah, I guess she is." Kiefer replied with a smile.
    "Let's go."

Tony went out to the car and got the door for Kiefer who hopped right in after what Tony went around while Jack waited near the passenger door until he was in. He had a hard time holding Molly because she was yanking on the leash, but he held her, talking to her. Once Kiefer and Tony were in the car, he let her take control and she pulled him along. They turned the corner and she went straight for a tree planted a few feet away and tended to her business at the foot of it.
"I bet that feels good." Jack said with a smile.
Molly confirmed it by jumping up against him when she was done and he let her take him down the street with the SUV coming up behind him. They reached an open area and Jack leaned down, his hand on the leash.
"You're gonna be a good girl and come back when I call you, won't you?" he asked softly.
Molly licked his face in response and he unhooked the leash but she didn't move.
"Go play." Jack said and she shot away.
He heard the horn the same instant and looked back at the SUV. Tony was gesticulating wildly, his cell phone glued to his ear. Jack's phone buzzed and he picked up with a dry "What?" knowing it was Tony.

"He's gonna kill you if we have to chase her."

"Tell him I'll give him my gun to do it with." Jack replied jokingly.

"He'll give you his gun if we have to chase her." Tony relayed to Kiefer.

"Remind him I know how to use it."

"I have to remind you he knows how to use it." Tony repeated to Jack.

"I know he does, tell him to relax already, she'll be back."

"Jack says to relax, she'll be back."

"Whose dog is it?" Kiefer replied dryly.

"Whose dog is it Jack?" Tony repeated again.

"Trust me." Jack replied with a grin.

He hung up and turned to scan the area, spotted Molly and called to her. She lifted her head and looked at him.
"Here girl." Jack called, stooping down and clapping his hands.
She came running straight at him and he let her literally run into his arms, bracing for impact the moment before she slammed into him. He got a good hold of her and hooked up the leash again to cross the street.
"Come girl, heel." Jack said and Molly glued herself to his leg, staying right beside him.
Tony got out of the car and got in the backseat while Jack let Molly jump into the cargo bay of the vehicle. She'd have plenty of space all to herself and she wouldn't get in the way. He unhooked the leash and closed the cargo bay, climbed in behind the wheel and lowered the divider enough for Molly to stick her head through, but not climb into the cabin.
"I think I can leave my gun where it is." Jack said to Kiefer as he turned the key in the ignition.

"How did you know she'd come back? She has a habit of running out on me at the worst possible time."

"I guess she knew she'd be coming along for the ride."
"Besides, we're good enough buddies to share beds now." Jack added, referring to Kiefer's comment that first night.

"You won't be sleeping on the couch." Kiefer replied with a grin.

    "Not right now I won't, I'm driving."
    "How's your head?"

    "Much better."

    "Still dizzy?"

"Not at all, and aside from a dull pain at the back of my skull, I'm fine."

"I guess you really have a hard nut to crack then."

    "Why?"

"I was sure the guy had knocked you a concussion with that blow."

"What did he hit me with anyway?"

    "A telescopic nightstick."

"Aren't those things made of metal?"

    "They certainly are."

"How the hell did he get that through security?"

"I asked Lyland that very same question." Jack replied, "He looked into it and we found out the guard had been alone at the gate when the group of them presented themselves and he didn't scan or frisk them because he was alone and didn't want them to waste too much time because of that."

    "Fucking idiot." Kiefer cursed softly.

"Jack?" Tony asked from the back.

    "Yeah?"

    "We questioned that guy right?"

    "Yeah, he's clean."

"What about the guy who was supposed to be with him at the gate? Do we know who left him alone?"

Jack met Tony's eyes through the rearview mirror. That was an angle he had left uncovered.
He fished out his cellphone and called the Fox security department. He asked the man to transfer him with Lyland and got patched through after a moment.
    "Lyland."

"This is Jack Bauer." Jack said, "Sir, I'm sorry to bother you on a Saturday morning, but we forgot to check into something yesterday."

    "What's that?"

"You remember the guard at the gate who let the extras in without scanning them?"

"Yes of course I do." Lyland replied a little aggravated.

"Can you look into who was supposed to be with him? I think he stated his colleague was on his break but the guard who was supposed to replace him didn't show up, that's why he was alone at the gate when they showed up."

    "What are you thinking?"

"I'm thinking maybe the man who was supposed to replace the colleague didn't show on purpose."

"So his buddy could slip through security more easily?"

    "Exactly."

"I'm heading over to the studios right now."

    "Can you keep me posted?"

    "Will do."

    "Thank you."
Jack hung up and met Tony's eyes again.
"That was smart thinking there, Tony."

    "Thanks boss." Tony replied.

"You make a pretty good team." Kiefer said quietly, "You don't need much to understand what the other means and you're picking up each other's slack."
"How long have you been working together?"

"Tony joined CTU about six months ago but this is the first time we're out in the field together." Jack replied.
"I think it'll happen again." he added, again meeting Tony's eyes in the mirror.
"It's good to know I've got someone competent backing me up."

"How long have you been doing this?"

"Just over three years. CTU's a rather new agency and I was recruited out of Special Forces."

"Did you want to leave that?"

"I told my CO he could always count on me if he needed my help, I've gone on a few missions since I started working for CTU."

"Really?" Tony asked from the back.

    "What kind of missions?"

"The secret kind." Jack replied evasively.

    "Point taken." Kiefer replied.
    "Do you like dogs?"

"Dogs have always been my best buddies."

    "It shows."
