When Fiction Meets Reality - Pt. 19

No matter how he tried, Kiefer couldn't convince her to agree. It made Jack decide to call Chapelle again and request a ‘juvenile' agent to get assigned to Sarah's protection in school, it was the only place she wasn't entirely safe. Chapelle gave him trouble, as expected, because he was called again.

"Isn't there anything you can do by yourself Bauer?" Chapelle snapped suddenly.

"I could if I were in that office." Jack snapped back.
"Or if you would stop questioning every step I take. I know my job and I know what needs to be done, are you willing to let me run this thing on my own or should I keep bugging you each time I need to take a shit?"

The line remained blank for a moment and Jack could swear he heard Chapelle gasp in surprise at his outburst, but he was fed up with his nosey ass attitude, questioning him on everything he did and snapping at him for everything he asked.

"You can run your investigation as you see fit agent Bauer," Chapelle said after a long silence, "but if you mess up, I won't be mopping up behind you. I'll make sure you never get into that office if you fail to see this thing through."

"Please advice CTU of your decision." Jack said and hung up without another word.
He could feel all of their eyes on him but he kept his back turned and his eyes on his portion of the park. He needed to calm down before he could face any of them again.
A few minutes later, his cellphone buzzed and he took the call on the second buzz, he still had it tightly clasped in his hand.
    "Bauer."

"Sir, this is Henderson at CTU, I just received a call from district director Chapelle. He said you needed one of our younger agents."

"Yes that's right. I need you to get me someone who could easily pass off for a highschool kid, the youngest you can get. I need someone to keep close tabs on a 15 year old girl."

"Do you need a female agent?"

"Preferably, that way we can even cover gym and bathroom breaks."

    "When?"

    "Monday."

"I'll see what I can do."

    "Make it happen."

    "Who are we covering."

    "Sarah Sutherland."

    "The daughter of?"

    "Yes. Make it happen Henderson."

    "Yes sir."

Jack pocketed his phone and turned back to the others. Most of his anger at Chapelle had vanished with this last call.
He had untied his hands and would now be able to pull any kind of resources he deemed necessary.
"What are you guys planning next?" Jack asked Kiefer and Sarah.

"I'd like to get Sarah home, in a safe environment."

    "Are you staying?"

"I don't think I should. I think I need to get home and get some rest."

"Dad are you all right?" Sarah asked at once.
There had been something weird in his voice. Something she didn't like.

"I'm fine sweetie, I've had a long week and all of this is starting to get to me. I need to take a breather."
"If I stay here, I'll only worry about you and that won't be fun for you."

"I understand dad. I'm sorry if I upset you."

"You didn't upset me honey, they are."
"I just need to get some rest."

"Aren't you going to worry about me when you're home alone?"

"I won't be alone, Jack and Tony will be with me."
"Besides, I know you'll be safe, you've got people watching over you."

"Those two." Sarah said, pointing to the agents.

"Not only them." Kiefer replied, "There are more at the house."
"I want you to stay home this weekend and if you want to go somewhere, check with them before you go."

    "Okay dad."

"Come here sweetheart." Kiefer said, pulling her to him and wrapping his arms around her.
"I love you Sarah and I don't want anything to happen to you. I won't let anything happen to you."
"I need you to be strong for a little while longer and stay with these people."

"I love you too dad." Sarah replied softly, holding on tightly.
It felt so good to hold him after such a long time and she didn't want to let go just yet.
She couldn't understand why anybody would want to hurt him and she was afraid to let go. Afraid he would go back to his own home and something would happen to him. Afraid she would lose him to these maniacs.
She fought her tears and held him tightly. She felt safe in his arms. Safe from everything and everyone, he would never let her down. Not him, not ever.
They didn't move for the longest time, cherishing the moment of peace. But then Kiefer got up and they headed back to her mother's.
Sarah let herself into the house and Kiefer handed Molly's leash to Jack who put her in the car and waited by the driver's side door. Tony stood halfway between him and Kiefer, the other agents had stayed back and were holding their position three houses down. The second team was half a block down the street in the opposite direction, all sides were covered, nothing could happen.
It took Kiefer ten more minutes to say goodbye to Sarah and when he left the house and closed the door, Jack could tell he was fighting tears. Jack opened the back door on the driver's side and Kiefer climbed in without a word with Tony going around to the passenger side and getting in front, riding shotgun.

They didn't talk much on the way back, Tony and Jack exchanged a few words, but they were all aware of the immense pressure bearing down on them. Moments before Jack parked the car, his cellphone buzzed.
    "Bauer."

"Jack, it's Jamey. You're gonna love this."

"I'll call you right back, we're just pulling up to the house."

    "Okay boss."
He got Kiefer inside and called Jamey right back.
"As I said, you're gonna love this."
    "Heyes and Huntington are related."

    "What?"

"Huntington is Lisa-Marie's married name. She's Marc Heyes' younger sister."

    "Anything else?"

"Yes, Heyes is known to the department of justice under an alias. He's wanted for blackmail and extortion."

"Do you have a location on him?"

"No, but I'm sure Lisa-Marie will know where and how to find him."

"Keep working on it. Is Nina back?"

"She asked me to let you know Lettis came up empty. He's not connected. He gave us a partial description of the woman and that's it, he's never met the man who calls him when he has to drop a letter and he had no idea what was going on."

"Don't let him go just yet."

    "Nina put him in holding."

"Good, keep him there. I think I'll have another talk with him myself."

    "Do you need anything else?"

"Yes, the information about Heyes and his sister on my PDA … yesterday."

"It's on the way. What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to have a little talk with Lisa-Marie."

"Chapelle's not going to like that, he wants you glued to Kiefer's back."

"Chapelle gave me his blessing to go ahead and fuck this one up as well." Jack replied dryly, "I won't need to suck up to him to get something done any more."

"So this means we don't have to clear it with him every time you need resources and stuff?"

    "That's what it means Jamey."

    "Great."

"I know. Now get me the information."

    "There you go."

    Jack felt his PDA buzz.
    "Thanks Jamey, good job!"

    "Thanks boss."

Jack pocketed his phone and turned to Tony.
"Turns out the woman who told Lyland she doesn't know Heyes, is his sister, Huntington is her husband's name."

"She'll have warned him Lyland came looking for him."

"I know. That's why I'm going over there to have a little talk with her before she disappears on us."

    "You?"

"Yeah, me. I'm putting you in charge here and I'll keep the team on the street."

    "Are you taking back-up?"

"I'll see about that when I get there, I might have a team on stand-by if I need them."

"Did you clear it with Chapelle?" Kiefer asked from the kitchen where he was pouring himself a glass of water to take another aspirin.

"Chapelle gave me full authority on this." Jack replied, "He'll have my ass if I mess it up, but I don't intend to."

"Is that why you're taking charge of things?"

"Yes, I don't like being stuck in a place while everybody else is out there doing my job. I'm a field agent remember."

"Get them Jack, that's all I'm asking you." Kiefer said quietly, his eyes locked on Jack's.

    "I will."

He turned and headed back downstairs, hopped in the car and called CTU, got patched through to the team sitting in an anonymous car half a block down and instructed them to stay on it. He would have another team relieve them in a few hours. He checked the address on his PDA and drove off, a grim look on his face. It was time for him to turn up the heat. These people were pushing it and he had to stop them before something really bad happened. They had already gotten to Kiefer once, they wouldn't get to him again.
He reached Lisa-Marie Huntington's address 25 minutes later and parked out front, jumped out and walked briskly to the front door. He flashed his badge but she refused to let him in, so he kicked the door wide open and let himself in.
A man came running from the back and charged him at once, no questions asked, but Jack was ready for him and avoided the man's wild punch, striking back at once, landing the side of his hand in the man's throat, cutting off his respiration and throwing him to the ground. He drew his gun and turned it on the woman.

    "Are you Lisa-Marie Huntington?"

    "Yes." the woman replied.

    "Who is he?"

    "My husband."
The man was still on the ground, trying to get some air into his lungs.

    "Sit down and don't move."
Lisa-Marie sat on the couch, her eyes wide in shock and fear.
"Is there anybody else in here?"
    She shook her head.
"Are you sure? If I find anybody else, I'll have to hurt you for lying to me."
She shook her head again, more determined this time.
Jack kicked the man in the leg.
"Roll over and put your hands behind your back."
The man did, slowly and Jack kept his gun trained on the hallway the man had emerged from.
Once the man was in position, Jack knelt down putting his gun up against the man's spine, shifting it to his left hand and locking his handcuffs on him with his right. He pulled him to his knees and took him over to the couch, eyes on the hallway.
    "On your knees."
The man did, still not breathing properly.
"I'm a federal agent, I need to talk to you about Marc Heyes. If you cooperate, nothing will happen, if you refuse, I will put both of you under arrest and you will be questioned differently. Do you understand?"
    The man nodded.
"Is there anybody else in the house?"
    He shook his head.
"Stay put. If you move, I'll have to shoot you."
    The man nodded again.
"And that goes for you too." Jack said coldly, locking his gaze on the woman.
    She was terrified and nodded.

He moved away and quickly checked the remaining rooms, finding all of them empty like they had said. When he returned to the living room, the man was breathing normally again, but he hadn't moved and Jack called the back-up team in.

"My name is Jack Bauer, I'm a federal agent with the counter terrorist unit and I have a few questions about Marc Heyes."
    "Sir, stand up."
The man got up and came over to where Jack stood when he motioned for him to do so. The back-up arrived and Jack instructed them to take the man to the back room and keep him there. The man struggled for a moment, demanding to know what was going on and Jack stopped the men from manhandling him out of there.
"Sir, I need to ask you a few questions about your wife's brother, I would like to talk to the both of you separately. Nothing will happen to you if you cooperate. Go with these agents and I will be over to talk with you in a moment."

"I don't know anything about him."

"That's what I would like to find out."
He nodded to the agent and he took the man to the back, into the farthest room and closed the door.
"When have you last seen your brother?"

    "What do you want?"

"I want to know when you have last seen your brother." Jack replied dryly.
    Her entire attitude screamed cover-up.
"He gave this address at work but when his boss came over this morning, you told him you didn't know the man he was looking for. Did you think we wouldn't find out you were related to him?"
"When have you last seen your brother?"

    "Four months ago."

    "I don't believe you."

    "It's true."

"When did you last speak to him?"

"Do you know who Kiefer Sutherland is?"

"Yes, he's on TV all the time."

"That's right, he's been getting threats for over 3 months, and he almost got killed yesterday."

    Her head shot up.
    "What?"

"Your brother works as a security guard at Fox, doesn't he?"

    "Yes."

"We have reason to believe he facilitated an attack on Mr. Sutherland yesterday."

    "How?"

"He was supposed to take over from a colleague while he took his break but your brother didn't show up at his post, which left a guard alone at the main gate with a group of people to check. The man couldn't do his job efficiently and a weapon was smuggled into the studios. This weapon was used to attack Mr. Sutherland."

    "Is he okay?"

"No, he's in hospital." Jack lied.
    Her eyes widened again.
"I need to know where your brother is."

"I'm sure he's got nothing to do with this."

"Why did he call in sick today?"

    "I don't know."

    "Where can I find him?"

    "I don't know."

"Mrs Huntington, you'd better start talking to me, I'm losing my patience."
    "Where is your brother?"

    "Where?" Jack bellowed, startling her.

"He … he … has an apartment." the woman stammered.

    "Where?"

    "I don't know … downtown somewhere."

"That's not helping me." Jack snarled.
"I need to find him and I need to find him now."

"I don't know. But my husband's been there a few times to help my brother."

Jack pushed up, nodding to the agent who stayed with the woman while he went over to talk to the husband.
"Mr. Huntington, do you know where Marc Heyes lives?"

    "Yes I do."

    "Tell me."

"I don't know the address, I've been there, I can tell you how to get there."

"You'll show me how to get there." Jack replied coldly.
"Get him in my car." Jack said to the agent, "We'll put the woman in yours and we'll set out together."

The agent took Huntington out and got him into the backseat of Jack's car, securing him with the safety belt behind the passenger seat. Jack climbed behind the wheel and waited for the agents to secure the woman in their vehicle, after what they set out, following the instructions the man gave him. The trip took them downtown and Jack had a bad feeling Huntington would take them to the apartment leased by Bonney, but he didn't, he showed them to a five story building, claiming Heyes had the entire third floor to himself.
Jack saw movement behind one of the windows and drove by slowly, parking the car just around the corner. He called CTU and found Nina at her station.
"Nina it's Jack. I need complete surveillance on a building."

    "Complete complete?"

"Yes, satellite, phones, electronic activity and I want teams on the ground."
He gave her the address and heard her tap the keys.

"Okay, how many teams do you want?"

    "How many exits?"

    "Two."

"Put two on each exit. I want to know everything that happens in there and I want to know everybody who walks in or out of that building. I'm bringing Mr. and Mrs Huntington in for questioning, do you think you could handle them?"

    "Sure thing Jack."

"Okay, I'll have another talk with Lettis while I'm there. Get that surveillance up and running now Nina, and get those teams out here on the double."

"The order has already been given Jack, they're on the way."

"Hey, that's him." Huntington said from the back and Jack looked up.

    "Where?"

"Straight ahead, red shirt, blue jeans."

"Nina get on it." Jack said, ending the call.
He used his cellphone to take several pictures of the man coming down the street. He was tempted to take him down now, but there had been movement in his apartment, maybe he was meeting someone and Jack couldn't afford to lose a lead here. They would stake the place out until they had a clear view of who was connected to Heyes and how he connected to Bonney. Something told Jack this was just the top of the iceberg and he couldn't break it off. If he did, he would lose everything below sea level.
He called the other team and told them to stand by until the surveillance was in place. They could bring the woman into CTU afterwards.
"Make sure she can't alert anybody." Jack said, giving the men instructions to either gag or sedate the woman to keep her from compromising their position.
