When Fiction Meets Reality - Pt. 26
Moments later, his PDA buzzed and Jack checked the list of files accessed by Heyes. There weren't too many and it really seemed as if he had randomly accessed files while looking for the ones he needed.
A few minutes later, his cell phone rang again.
"Bauer."
"It's Nina, all teams are still in place."
"Good. Thanks Nina."
"Do you need anything else?"
"Can you crosscheck the list of files Heyes accessed against Kendrick, see if his name comes up in any of them, it looks random and there may not be a pattern, but I'd like to know for sure."
"Sure thing Jack, I'll get right on it."
"Great."
He hung up and put the phone down again.
"Jack?"
It was Kiefer's voice.
"Yes?"
"Did you say ‘Kendrick'?"
"Yes, an ex-marine by the name of John Kendrick. Do you know him?"
"Sort of."
"What do you mean?"
"I played a character named Jonathan Kendrick a few years back in a film about the marines at Guantanamo Bay."
"Which film?" Tony asked.
"'A Few Good Men', it starred Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson in the lead roles."
"Did you have much contact with the marines for that?"
"I didn't, not for that part anyway, it was only a short bit at the beginning and another short sequence near the end."
"Could this guy have been involved?" Tony asked.
"If he was an advisor, he might have been, but it's like I said, I only had a small part in that, so I didn't have any contact with external advisors. It's not like on ‘24' where I need to know what I'm doing and make it look right. I'm in close contact with safety and other advisors because I play the lead part, but not on that film."
"Maybe he doesn't like you and he's pissed off at you for using his name." Tony chuckled.
He was trying to lighten up the mood, but his words struck home both with Jack and Kiefer.
It was a possibility.
"We have to find Kendrick." Jack stated matter-of-factly.
They all agreed.
A few hours later, doctor Regis came in to check on Kiefer. She made a few notes on his chart and made a call to get another scan, they had a gap two hours later, so she noted Kiefer down at that time.
"If the scan comes back clean, you can go home." Regis said to Kiefer, giving him a comforting squeeze in the arm.
"You'll still need to rest a lot and stay in the dark for a few days, give yourself some time to get back on your feet."
"Okay, thank you doctor." Kiefer replied quietly.
The most recent events had convinced him he couldn't always deal with everything alone and needed to follow the advice of professionals at times.
For the next two hours, Jack and Tony made sure to keep his mind busy on other things, talking about music, the studio, family and other topics. If he was to get any rest at all, he had to be calm and relaxed.
When the nurse came to get him, they tagged along and stayed with him throughout.
As soon as the results of the scan were in, doctor Regis came back to his room, release documents in hand.
"The swelling is completely gone." she said, sitting down on the edge of the bed.
"I can't stress enough how important it is for you to rest a few more days, I know you're busy filming and I know you've already lost a few days, but if you rush back to work to catch up on the lost time, chances of relapse increase dramatically."
"I promise I'll stay in bed a few more days." Kiefer replied with a faint smile.
He was happy enough to get out of hospital.
She handed him the documents and a pen so he could sign them, after what she wished him a good recovery and left again.
Jack helped him out of bed and into the sweatpants he had been wearing the other night while Tony went to find a wheelchair. He came back with one only minutes later and Kiefer got in without complaints. He was wearing Jack's jacket since he didn't have a shirt on when they brought him in and put his bare feet on the footrests. Instead of squinting against the light, he simply closed his eyes and let them take him out of there, trusting them to the fullest. They got him to the car without any problems and he climbed into the back seat with only minimal help to keep his balance.
Tony took the wheelchair back while Jack climbed in behind the wheel. He reached overhead and retrieved his sunglasses, handing them to Kiefer who thankfully put them on, shielding his eyes from the bright light outside. Tony climbed in, riding shotgun and Jack pulled out behind the other SUV, heading towards Kiefer's place. They helped him out of the car and up to his apartment, taking him straight to the back and helping him to bed.
Jack dismissed the second team and checked in with Nina at CTU, letting her know they were back at Kiefer's place.
"Any changes?"
"There has been a lot of movement today, Kendrick was there earlier, but he's gone now."
"Dammit!" Jack snapped.
"Nina, I want you to gather all the intel on that and prepare it for me."
"When do you want that?"
"I'm coming over right now."
"Okay."
She hung up and Jack turned to Tony.
"I'm heading over to CTU. Are you okay on your own here or do you want me to call that second team back?"
"That's all right Jack, I've got back-up if I need it."
"Why are you going back to CTU?"
"I want to have a plan of attack ready for when Kendrick shows up again. If he points his nose at that apartment again, I want to be ready to nail him."
"all right."
By the time Jack got to CTU, Nina had already prepared the information he needed on the building and on the movements over the weekend up until this very moment. With her help, Jack went over a few possible plans, then decided on what seemed the best one to both of them and he set it in motion, calling in the strike team he wanted on this. It took the team nearly an hour to assemble and Jack went over the plan with them, handing out clear assignments to each member of the team and stressing the importance of the assault.
"When are we moving in sir?"
"As soon as our primary target is at the location." Jack replied, "I want you to stay on full alert. I want to be able to move in on that building within twenty minutes. When I get the call, you will have twenty minutes to set up and move in. Make sure your team is on the ready."
"Twenty minutes notice? Do we have a location near the site where we could set up shop?"
"Agent Meyers is looking into that right now."
"We can't afford to let this man get away. He is our primary target, what happens to the rest of them, is less important."
Nina knocked on the door and Jack waved her in.
"Jack, I found an apartment for rent half a block away from our target location, I've made the call and it's ours. I can pick up the keys in half an hour."
"You heard the lady." the team leader said without waiting for Jack's orders, "Let's gear up."
"We'll meet you out front in ten minutes, agent Meyers."
"Thank you agent Banks."
The team left the briefing room and so did Nina, leaving Jack alone to go over the plans again. He spent the next half hour going over the details of his attack plan, then saved his files and logged off. He called the agent in charge of the surveillance team, leaving them with clear instructions to call him the moment Kendrick entered the building, informing the agent they had a strike team on stand-by half a block away from their position.
Then he typed up a quick report about the incident at the hospital that morning and sent it on to Chapelle, along with a copy of his assault plan.
He logged out and went back to Kiefer's place.
He was once again met halfway down the hall by an overexcited Molly and she jumped around him until they reached the stairs which she took three at a time, reaching the top in no time. She stopped and turned back, darting down towards Jack and then back up again. She climbed the stairs 5 times before Jack was at the top of them, a smile on his face at her playfulness.
Tony was in the living room, flipping through the channels and he looked up when Jack came in.
"Everything okay here?" Jack asked quietly.
"Yeah, I checked on him a while ago and he was asleep. How did it go?"
"Everything's set. If Kendrick shows himself, we'll nail him. I've got a team holding up in an apartment half a block down and four surveillance teams on site. We've got all angles covered."
"Do you think he's the brains?"
"I'm still not sure, there may be someone pulling his strings, but I think he's the one to tackle. If we can take him out and maybe catch Heyes along with him, we will have kicked their legs out from under them. Once we've got him, we'll mop up the rest of them. I think Kendrick is the most dangerous element and I want to take him out before something really bad happens."
"Yeah." Tony agreed.
"Do you have any idea why they want him dead?"
"Not anymore. I thought I had an idea when I first read those threats, but this is getting too wild, it doesn't make any sense."
"But you're confident we can nail these people right?"
"We will nail them Tony." Jack said confidently.
The net was in place, the security breach at CTU patched up and their investigation still firmly going. There was no way Kendrick would get away.
The evening went by peacefully and Jack took Molly out for a short walk just before turning in for the night.
A few minutes later, his cell phone rang again.
"Bauer."

Is it me or you missed 25th part?
No I posted it but I mucked up the posting date. Fixed now. (I added all these posts on the same date so to get them to post in order I have to change the date when I go to publish. Sometimes I'm dumb and forget :)
