When Fiction Meets Reality - Pt. 28
Bonney shifted again, unwilling to just give up and roll over, but unwilling to take the fall for things on his own as well. He knew what Melissa knew and he also knew she had more reasons to cut a deal than he did. They could use stuff against her, but if she cut a deal, she would most probably let him take the fall.
"Talk to me Bonney." Jack said after a long silence.
"All I want from you right now is information on Kendrick. Where can I find him?"
"What can I get in return?" Bonney asked and Jack felt his heart leap in his chest.
"I can bring the charges against you down to simple stalking."
"You weren't physically involved in any attacks against Mr. Sutherland so I'm sure that could float."
"But I want to know where Kendrick is or how I can find him."
"Can I get that in writing?"
"No William, you can't." Jack replied coldly, "I want something from you first."
"Something that will prove you're not trying to shit me."
"If you give me Kendrick, I'll bring the charges against you down to stalking, you'll do some community service and pay a fine and after that you'll be off the hook."
…
"How does that sound to you William?"
"Does that sound like something you could live with?"
"Just a fine and community service?" Bonney asked hesitantly.
"Yes William. You didn't do anything did you? Aside from dropping off a few letters?"
"No, I never did anything."
"I don't even understand why you got involved in this." Jack said pensively, "I mean, what reasons did you have to get into this?"
"What has that guy ever done to you that would get you involved in a plot to kill him?"
"Melissa asked me to."
"Why does she hate him?"
"I don't know. You'll have to ask her."
"Okay, I guess I will."
"Now tell me where I can find Kendrick."
"He's staying in a motel near Westwood Park."
"Which one?"
"The Stardust Motel on Hilgard avenue."
"Do you know what room number?"
"He's in unit 3, room 6."
"If we don't find him there, where else could he be?"
"Anywhere."
"Is he the man behind this?"
"Yes."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"He doesn't get his orders from someone else?"
"No."
"Do you know what his grudge is against this guy?"
"No."
"Does Melissa know?"
"Probably."
"Okay William, here's what we'll do. I'll get you some medical attention in a minute, dress your wounds properly and give you something against the pain. Then I'll send a team to check out that motel you just told me about. If we find Kendrick there, I'll call the attorney general and inform us of our deal. If we don't find Kendrick, we'll put some surveillance up, but until we get confirmation Kendrick is actually staying there, you get nothing. If, on the other hand, we find out Kendrick isn't staying there, or wasn't staying there, you and I will have another chat and I can guarantee you, you won't like it in the least."
He waited a moment, giving Bonney time to assimilate everything.
"Now, are you sure Kendrick is or was staying at the Stardust Motel on Hilgard avenue, unit 3, room 6?"
"Yes."
"Good. I'll send a doctor over to take care of those wounds."
Jack left the room and met Chapelle outside.
"Stardust Motel on Hilgard avenue." Jack stated, "Unit 3, room 6."
"Let's get a few teams out there."
"I want to run point."
"You'd better get in the air then."
Jack hurried to his station and requested a helicopter to pick him up. It would be there ten minutes later. The moment he hung up, his phone rang again. It was Chapelle.
"The teams will be there in 25 minutes."
"I've got a bird coming in 10, it shouldn't take me that long to get there. Who's the team leader?"
"Agent Harris."
"Thank you Ryan."
Jack geared up and headed for the helipad. The chopper set down and Jack climbed in at once, giving the pilot directions as he closed the door, feeling the aircraft lift off at once. The man knew better than to waste any time. Jack called Harris on the way and they arranged for a meeting point, Jack would make it there within minutes. The pilot dropped him off 12 minutes later, with three minutes to spare before the teams arrived and Jack waited impatiently. He was eager to get to that motel.
The team he had sent in pursuit had never picked up the trace of the vehicle since nobody knew what car Kendrick was driving and Nina hadn't gotten anything specific from the traffic cameras. Jack expected Kendrick to have either retreated to his motel and to have dug in, or to have gone back there to collect anything that may be of help to the authorities in finding him or proving he was involved in it. Either way, Jack hoped to find Kendrick at the motel. If he was there, this thing could be over tonight.
Two CTU vans rolled up and Jack hopped into the first one while it was still in motion. He was done wasting time waiting around for things. Minutes later, they reached the Stardust motel and Jack went up to the reception desk.
"Good evening." the man behind the counter said with a smile.
"Evening." Jack replied, "I'm a federal agent sir, and I'm looking for this man."
He showed a picture of Kendrick.
"I was told he has a room here."
"He might be. What do you want from him?"
"He's involved in an assassination plan." Jack replied calmly, "If this man is here, I need to know now."
"Do you have any ID?"
Jack showed his badge to the man.
"Unit 3, room 6."
"Thank you sir."
"But he's not in." the man continued before Jack could turn.
"He left about 20 minutes ago."
"Did he check out?"
"Yes."
"Dammit." Jack cursed.
"Do you mind if we take a look in that room?"
"No, I don't. It won't be cleaned until morning."
"Do you have a key?"
The man handed it to him.
"Thank you sir."
"Just don't break anything."
"We won't have to sir, we have the key."
Jack hurried back outside and called over to Harris.
"He checked out 20 minutes ago but I still want you to check out the room."
"Yes sir. What about you?"
"I've got a few calls to make."
He thought of something and headed back to the reception area.
"Harris." he called as the team moved away.
"Proceed with extreme caution, this is a former Navy Seal."
"Yes sir."
Jack went back to the clerk.
"Do you know what car this man drives?"
"Yeah, he's got this old model Ford Mustang."
"What colour?"
"Dark blue, with a black eagle painted on the hood."
"License plate?"
"I'm sorry, I never pay attention to that. I know I should, but I don't."
"That's okay, thank you very much for your help sir."
Jack went back outside and called Nina. He needed her to get on the traffic cameras around the area to try and pick up a dark blue old model Ford Mustang with a black eagle painted on the hood.
"That's a pretty good description you got there Jack." Nina joked, "Any chance I'll get a license plate to go with that?"
"None, the guy didn't pay attention to it."
Jack asked her to put him through to Chapelle and he informed him of the result so far.
"So he's on the move." Chapelle concluded, "Means we got close enough to scare him."
"Problem is, he might try to round up others to assist in his plans."
"Or go underground and forget all about it."
"Are we willing to take that chance, sir?"
"No Jack, we're not." Chapelle replied, "I want you to stay on top of this."
"Talk to me Bonney." Jack said after a long silence.
