When Fiction Meets Reality - Pt. 16
Jack reached the door where Molly sat waiting impatiently, wagging her tail across the floor, trembling in anticipation. He hooked up the leash and reached for the door when a plain white envelope slipped under it. Jack yanked the door open and Molly shot out, leaping at the man in front of it. He fell backwards and looked up to see Jack's gun pointed at his head, with Molly's teeth sunk in his jacket sleeve.
"Tony!" Jack bellowed at the top of his lungs.
"You!" he snapped, "Don't move."
"Molly down girl."
She didn't react.
"Molly, let go of him."
She growled viciously.
"Molly!" Jack snapped hearing Tony's running footsteps behind him, "Heel girl."
"Jack?" Tony called from inside.
"Clear."
Tony stepped out, gun drawn.
"I was about to open the door when he slipped an envelope under it. Get the dog off him."
Tony approached and picked up the leash, keeping his gun trained on the guy's head.
Jack scanned the sidewalk but nobody was close enough to be a threat to them and he focused his attention on the man in front of him. Tony was trying to pull Molly off him, but she wouldn't let go, instead she took a better grip on his arm and he yelped in pain.
"Kiefer call her off." Jack yelled.
Seconds later they heard a high pitched whistle and Molly let go at once, ripping her leash out of Tony's hand and darting back inside.
"Secure him." Jack ordered.
Tony holstered his weapon and rolled the man on his stomach, locking a pair of handcuffs on his wrists.
"Okay get him up and inside."
Tony manhandled the man to his feet and shoved him into the hall. Jack kept his gun trained on him even though he had been secured.
"First door on the left." Jack instructed and Tony pushed the man in.
"Stay with him, I'll call it in."
Jack left the room and locked it from the outside. Kiefer was at the top of the stairs, Molly by his side, the leash untied in his hand so she could move quickly and freely if she had to. Jack hurried upstairs and took his cellphone from Kiefer. The man was definitely thinking on his feet.
He punched in the number for CTU.
"CTU Los Angeles."
"This is Bauer, I need a forensic team at the Sutherland address and a team to take a suspect into custody."
"May I have your clearance code sir?"
‘Oh damn, fresh blood!' Jack thought to himself, rolling his eyes.
"Bravo Zulu 6315 Yankee."
"Thank you sir, I'll send those teams straight away."
"Thank you." Jack said, forcing himself to stay polite.
"What happened?" Kiefer asked when Jack hung up.
"I was at the door with her and this guy slipped an envelope under it. I yanked the door open and she leapt at him." Jack said, patting Molly on the head.
"Good girl!"
"He never had a chance to get away."
"Why did you need me to call her off?"
"She wouldn't let go of him." Jack chuckled.
"She was taking a nice bite out of his ass and wouldn't let it go."
"Are you okay?" he asked, meeting Kiefer's eyes.
They were a bit watery, but alert.
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"What's going to happen now?"
"We'll wait for the agents to get here and we can see about going anywhere after that. Did you call your daughter yet?"
"No, I was about to."
"Okay, call her and tell her you only just got out of bed and you don't know if you'll make it today."
"I'll be downstairs with Tony, I don't want you showing yourself until I tell you everything's clear."
"Got it." Kiefer said.
Jack went back downstairs and joined Tony in the room with the man who had just slipped the envelope under the door.
"Has he said anything?" Jack asked.
"He asked me who the fuck I was and with what right I kept him tied up. And he said he was gonna sue me if I didn't untie him at once."
"Okay, has he said anything interesting?" Jack clarified.
"No." Tony replied with a smirk.
"We're federal agents," Jack said to the man, "you just slipped an envelope under the door. What's in it?"
"That's none of your fucking business." the man snapped.
"Untie me now or I'll sue you to the ground."
"I'm not untying you." Jack replied coldly.
"Did you search him?"
"He's clean."
"Who are you?"
"Fuck you."
"That's an interesting name. Well Mr. fuck you, I'm a federal agent and you are under arrest, while you are in my custody, you haven't got any rights, not even the right to an attorney or a phonecall. Now tell me your name."
"Fuck you."
"Fine."
"Tony wait outside."
Tony left the room without a word. He had heard about Jack's interrogation techniques and he was sure this guy was going to get a taste of them.
"Now it's just you and me." Jack continued, "I'll give you one more chance to tell me your name."
"And what are you gonna do?" the man asked smugly.
Jack backhanded him in response.
"That for starters." Jack said coldly, "Give me your name. We'll get it the minute we run your prints and to me it doesn't make a single difference how I get it. It might make a difference to you though."
"How's that?" the man asked a little less smugly this time.
"If you cooperate with me, I'll treat you with respect. If you don't, neither will I."
He paused to give the man time to think about it.
"Tell me your name."
"Brian Lettis."
"What's in the envelope you just dropped Brian?"
"I don't know."
"You don't know?"
"No, I just dropped it off for this guy."
"Have you done that before?"
"Yes."
"How often?"
"A couple of times."
"Who is the man you do this for?"
"I don't know his name."
"How does he contact you?"
"He leaves the letters in my mailbox and he calls me when he wants me to drop them off. This is the first time I've done this in the morning though, usually it's at night, sometimes even late at night, so I was a little surprised to get that call this morning."
"How did he first get in contact with you?"
"I'm unemployed and this woman bought me a few beers a while ago and asked me if I was interested in making a few bucks. So I told her I was, as long as it wasn't anything illegal. She said it wasn't and nobody's ever asked me to do anything more than drop off a letter."
"Do you know the woman's name?"
"No."
"Could you describe her to me?"
"I don't think so, I only saw her once and I got pretty drunk."
"Does this man call you on a regular phone or a cell?"
"A cell, they gave it to me, I don't even know the number."
"Where do you live?"
"I moved in a while ago, I live down the block."
Jack cursed himself for not having checked into that. Kiefer had told him someone had moved in a while ago.
But was this the same person? Hadn't Kiefer said he'd met them on occasion? He'd have to get a picture of this man to Kiefer.
"Do you know who lives here?"
"Yeah, that actor guy, I can't remember his name, it's south something."
"Tell me Brian, you are aware that you should carry your ID on you at all times, right?"
"Yes."
"Why don't you have your ID on you?"
"They told me not to take anything."
"Why did you tell me to fuck off when I first asked your name?"
"Because they told me if anybody asked questions, I couldn't say anything."
"And those instructions didn't lead you to believe you were being implicated in something illegal?"
The shock on Brian's face was genuine.
"You are implicated in a conspiracy to commit murder."
The man's face turned ashen.
"What you have been dropping off are threats, death threats, to Mr. Sutherland."
"I … I didn't know."
"I'm willing to believe you. But I strongly suggest you answer all of our questions and help us crack this case, or you will face the charges."
"Alone if needs be."
Jack's words were taking the man apart, he had trouble breathing and his brow was covered in a thick layer of sweat.
"I'm going to send you to our offices to be questioned further."
Brian nodded slowly.
"But right now, I want you to give me your complete address, the keys to your apartment and your permission to search it."
"O … okay." Brian stammered with some difficulty.
"My keys are in the right hand pocket of my jeans."
"Get up."
"I need to see a doctor, that dog bit me."
"Can you blame her?" Jack asked coldly.
"We'll get someone to look at it at CTU."
"What's CTU?"
"Counter Terrorist Unit." Jack explained while retrieving the key from the man's pocket.
"Terrorists? You mean I've been working for terrorists?" Brian exclaimed, dropping back to the chair.
He had been planning on kneeing Jack, but when he heard the name in full, he changed his mind about that. He wasn't going to get sucked up in this.
"These people have been threatening him for more than 3 months, wouldn't you be terrorized if that happened to you?"
"If they threatened to poison your dog? To kill your daughter? To slaughter your entire family?"
Brian's shock deepened with every word Jack said.
"That is what's in those letters you dropped off Brian. Threats against this man's family and friends."
"I've seen them."
"I've read them."
"This has been going on for more than 3 months and all of that because of some stupid TV show. The man didn't even do anything to anyone, it's about a character he plays on TV."
"A bunch of jerks are threatening to kill him and his family because of this character he plays on fucking TV, Brian."
He paused to make sure Brian would not miss what he was about to say next.
"And you helped them do it." Jack added softly, the softness of his voice only adding to the power of the words.
That power was devastating.
Brian suddenly saw himself standing in a court room, brought to justice for his participation in this.
Conspiracy to commit murder!
He'd surely spend some time in the slammer on that one.
He'd never get a job after that. His life would be over if he got sent to jail for something like that. He couldn't let those bastards screw him. He wasn't gonna take it, not in this lifetime.
"I'll help you." Brian managed weakly, voice croaking.
"Good. Stay right here."
Jack left the room and asked Tony to stay with the man, then hurried up the stairs.
"Kiefer?"
"Bathroom." Kiefer called from the back.
"Do you have a pen and paper I could use?"
"I'll be right there."
He came out of the bathroom moments later and Jack could tell he was feeling better. He was steady on his feet coming down the hall and he went to a desk to retrieve a notebook and a pen.
"What's going on?"
"Someone asked this guy if he wanted to make a buck and they asked him to drop some of those letters, I don't think he's involved but I'll have someone question him in depth to make sure of that."
"What's with this?"
"I want him to give me a written permission to search his apartment."
"Why?"
"I messed up one investigation because I went in without a warrant, I won't mess this one up the same way. If he gives me permission to search his place, I don't need a warrant."
Jack went back downstairs and just as he reached the door, he heard a knock at the front door.
"Who is it?" he called loudly.
"CTU Los Angeles sir."
Jack drew his weapon and checked the door, recognised the agents and let them in. The forensic team was with them as well and Jack pointed them to the envelope, asking the other agents to wait a moment.
He went into the room and drew up a note, authorizing CTU to search the man's apartment, then only did he nod to Tony who uncuffed him.
"Write your full address at the bottom, date it and sign it."
"Are you sure this is legit?"
"This keeps me from wasting time, mine and a judge's." Jack replied.
"You don't have to sign it, but you said you wanted to help stop these people, this is the fastest way to do that."
He held out the pen and Brian took it, wrote down his address, dated and signed the paper, making it official.
"Thank you." Jack said, nodding to Tony who cuffed the man's arms behind his back again.
"These men will take you back to CTU and you'll have to answer a few more questions. They'll get a doctor to look at your arm as well."
He nodded to the men and instructed them to get the suspect back to CTU ASAP, have a doctor look at the bites on his arm and prepare him for questioning. Once they were gone, he turned his attention to the forensic team.
"Can you open that letter for me?"
"Sure." the first agent said, taking out his set of tweezers.
They carefully opened the envelope and put it in a sealed evidence bag, then handed it to Jack.
‘You are one lucky bastard.
You will not be lucky again.
Release my man or your daughter dies.'
"Put it away and seal the bag, I don't want him seeing that." Jack said quickly.
"I'm going to need you down the block though."
He called CTU and asked to be patched through to Chapelle.
"What is it Bauer?"
"Sir, we've got a few developments I wanted to inform you about."
"Talk fast Bauer, it's Saturday morning."
"That I know sir." Jack said coldly.
"Another letter was dropped off this-."
"I hope you and agent Almeida apprehended the-" Chapelle interrupted him.
"Yes we did." Jack interrupted in turn.
"I have him en route for CTU at this moment, and I'll ask Nina to take care of the interrogation."
"I'm going to need a few more teams though."
"What do you mean by ‘a few more'?" Chapelle asked impatiently.
"Well for starters, we'll have to up the surveillance on Mr. Sutherland's daughter."
"Why?"
"The letter that was just delivered states she will be killed if the man we apprehended at the studio yesterday isn't released."
"So you'll need an extra team on that?"
"Yes sir. And two teams to assist the forensic team to search the apartment of the man I just took into custody."
"You need a warrant for that Bauer." Chapelle snapped, hoping to remind Jack of the disaster he caused going in without one.
"No sir, I don't." Jack snapped back, "The suspect was kind enough to give me written permission to search his apartment."
"Good, I'll issue the orders."
"Thank you sir."
"You're dealing with Nina for the interrogation?"
"Yes sir."
"Good."
Chapelle hung up and Jack punched in Nina's direct line.
"Nina Meyers."
"Nina, Jack, I need you to work extra time."
"No problem Jack. What do you want?"
"I've got a suspect coming in, I want you to interrogate him. A man by the name of Brian Lettis. He says he's unemployed and was approached by a woman who offered him to make a buck dropping some of these letters. He got a cellphone from them and gets a call from a man whenever he is required to make a drop. I've got the forensic team here with me so I'll be taking them over to the apartment and I want you to be ready for me when I call you with that cellphone."
"Full backtrack on all the calls made to that number?"
"Yes."
"Okay, I'll call Jamey in."
"Thanks Nina."
He hung up and turned to Tony.
"We'd better keep our eyes and ears wide open on this one, they're getting nervous."
"Means we're getting close."
"I know."
"I wish he'd decide to stay in after all of this, but I'm afraid he'll want to see his daughter."
"Why do you say that?"
"Chapelle will send an extra team to guard Sarah, he's bound to notice."
"And he'll wonder why."
"Yeah."
"What will you tell him?"
"If he decides to go and asks about it, I'll have to tell him the truth."
"He'll worry sick."
"Don't I know." Jack asked with a worried look on his face.
"I'd much rather put him and his daughter in protective custody, get them out of sight somewhere."
"At a safe house you mean?"
"He'll never agree."
"I know, he won't let them dictate his life."
"That's what bugs me most."
Jack turned to the stairs.
"Okay, let me see if he still wants to go."
"I can take you over to the apartment while he gets ready." he added, addressing the forensic team.
They nodded their agreement and Jack went back to the apartment.
"Do you still want to go see your daughter?"
"Yes." Kiefer replied without hesitation.
"Fine, you can get ready while I take the forensic team over to the other apartment."
"I need to take Molly out, she's about to burst."
"I don't want you roaming the streets. She'll have to wait until I'm back."
"Hurry."
"I'll try to, and I'll send Tony back up to stay with her and keep her from flooding your living room."
"She won't."
"Tony!" Jack bellowed at the top of his lungs.
"You!" he snapped, "Don't move."
"Molly down girl."
She didn't react.
