When Fiction Meets Reality - Pt. 20
He drove to CTU and took Huntington to an interrogation room, leaving it up to security to get him ready for Nina. He went into the next interrogation room and ordered Lettis to be brought in. The man was beyond edgy after having spent hours in a cell. Jack squeezed him hard and came to the comforting conclusion Lettis really didn't know anything more than he claimed. He called it quits after almost an hour and dismissed Lettis, knowing the forensic teams had cleared his apartment a while ago.
"Don't disappear on me Brian. If I have to come find you, you won't like it."
"Why would you want to find me?"
"If there's anything else I want to ask you."
"Okay."
"Good, you can go."
Lettis left the building and Jack dropped into his desk chair with a heavy sigh.
He hated going around in circles without getting anywhere. He wanted progress, breakthroughs, suspects in custody. He wanted to go home, hug his daughter and make love to his wife he hadn't seen in four days.
He punched up the surveillance feed from the interrogation room Nina was in. She was still working on Huntington, Lisa-Marie was in a different room, waiting to be questioned.
"Jack, I've got a location."
Jack jumped up and hurried over to Jamey's workstation, looking over her shoulder.
"This is where those computers at the Bonney address are linked to."
"Good work Jamey." Jack said, tapping her on the shoulder.
"We've already got the place under surveillance."
"What?"
"That's where Huntington took me, that's Marc Heyes' address."
Jack ran over to the interrogation room and barged in, startling both Nina and Huntington.
"Nina, we've got something. Are you getting anything?"
"No, I was just about to call it quits, he doesn't know anything more about Heyes."
"That's okay." Jack said, turning to Huntington.
"Sir, you've really helped us a lot by showing us where Marc Heyes lives, thank you for your help."
"Can I go?"
"Yes. But your wife can't leave just yet, I still need to talk to her."
"I understand."
"Nina, get Mr. Huntington a cab and have it billed to us."
"Sure Jack."
"Thank you Mr. Huntington." Jack repeated, shaking the man's hand.
"And I apologize for what happened earlier."
"That's okay, I'm glad I could help."
Jack turned and left the room, going straight into the next.
Mrs Huntington looked up at him, eyes puffed and bloodshot, she had been crying.
"We found your brother Mrs Huntington and from the looks of things, he is deeply involved in this thing. The only way you can keep yourself from getting dragged down with him, is by telling me everything you know."
"What do you want to know?" she asked, her voice as shaky as the rest of her appearance.
"Do you know who your brother is working for?"
"He talked about a guy sometimes, called him Billy the Kid."
"He's doing this for me." the woman said softly.
"What do you mean?"
"My husband lost his job a few months ago, hasn't been able to find anything since and life isn't easy with what I have. Marc told me he'd help me out and a while later, he told me he had found a job on the side. It wasn't much but it got him some extra money, which he passed on to me. I never asked him about it, I was too happy to get his help. He lived with us for a while about a year back and he said this was how he repaid us for everything we'd done for him back then."
"Which is why he gave your address at work."
"Yes."
"But he also said I couldn't tell anybody what he did for a living, it was too dangerous if anybody found out."
"Why?"
"Well, being a security guard at a major studio, a lot of celebrities coming and going, he didn't want me talking to anybody about it."
"Is that why you told Lyland you didn't know him?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you let me into your house?"
"I was scared. You said you were a federal agent and I thought Marc had finally gotten into trouble for working different jobs."
"You didn't know what kind of a job he got on the side?"
"He once said it was something with computers. He's really good with computers you know."
"Is he?" Jack asked.
Maybe Heyes was the programmer behind this.
"Yes, he's always been very good with electronics. He can fix anything."
"My colleague will be with you in a short while, she'll ask you a few more questions. If you tell us everything you know, you'll be able to go home, otherwise we'll have to keep you here."
She nodded and Jack left the room. He had enough to work with for now.
He went over to Nina and saw she had the feed from the interrogation room on her screen.
"Did you follow that?"
"Yes, she just linked her brother to Bonney."
"And she told me he's really good with computers. We may have our hacker."
"Do you think Bonney's the head of this thing?"
"No, he's muscle."
"Middleman, contact and muscle; but not the brains."
"Do we have anything on Princeton?"
"Yeah, he gave up Bonney, but we already knew about that so I didn't want to bug you with it."
"Talk to me."
"Bonney's the one who ordered the attack on Kiefer."
"We have that on tape?"
"We sure do."
"Good. What else?"
"He knew there would only be one guard at the gate, which confirms this had been carefully planned. Bonney told him to make sure they were as late as possible without being too late so they would be able to put pressure on the guard. He had worked with Fox a few times already, his name was in the logs; it got him a free pass."
"Is he still in hospital?"
"Yes. But he had to go back into surgery and he's in the intensive care unit."
"What happened?"
"He tried to kill himself."
"Keep me posted on that."
"Anything from forensics on that letter?"
"Nothing. As usual."
"Lettis' apartment?"
"They're processing everything, but they did go over the phone and it's clean as can be, only Lettis' prints are on it and all calls made to it were made from phonebooths."
"Multiple?"
"Yes, a different one each time."
"Dammit."
"At least we've got them under surveillance now."
"Get someone on it, go home and get some rest. Both of you."
"I still need to talk to Lisa-Marie." Nina replied.
"Don't waste time, you heard what she told me, confirm she doesn't have anything else and go home."
"Jamey, the same goes for you. Get someone up to speed on what you've got running and go home. I may need both of you in here tomorrow."
"I'll keep my cell handy." Jamey replied without looking up from her screen.
"Jamey, get one of the analysts to take over from you … Now."
"Okay boss." Jamey replied, pushing up from her chair.
"You don't have to kick me out you know."
"You were here till three this morning, and you've been at it all day. Go home and take a break, if you think of anything, you can call the analyst and they'll take care of it. If I need you, I'll call you. Go home."
"Okay, okay, I'm going, I'm going." Jamey replied, throwing her hands up in surrender.
"Can I get Milo on this?"
"You can put anybody on this Jamey, just as long as it's not you."
She went back to her station and picked up the phone, punched in a number and talked with someone for a moment.
"Milo's on his way, he'll be here in half an hour."
"Good, make sure he knows who to call."
"The Ghostbusters?" Jamey asked with a smile.
"No, the Jamey-busters." Jack joked back.
"Where are you going Jack?"
"Back to babysit."
"Why do you always get the cool job?" Nina asked, pouting.
"Maybe coz I'm the boss." Jack teased.
"Don't make it long."
"I won't."
"Goodnight ladies."
"Night Jack." they replied in sync.
Jack drove back to Kiefer's place and parked out front. He suddenly realized he hadn't given orders to relieve the team and he called CTU, got them to transfer him to the team sitting in their car half a block down from where he was and got a different agent on the line. They had been called in by Nina Meyers two hours ago to take the nightshift and had arrived an hour ago.
Jack let out a sigh after hanging up, he was missing steps along the way, but his team was there to pick up any slack he left. It felt good to know he was surrounded by competent people, people he could count on under any circumstances, people who would work hard to get to the end of the task, without pointing fingers at each other for missing something. There were no back-stabbers on his team.
He got out of the car and locked it, then let himself in and was met halfway down the hall by a happy dog.
"Hey there girl." Jack said, petting her on the head, "Did you miss me?"
Molly jumped against him in response. It could only mean yes.
He went upstairs and found Kiefer and Tony in the living room, watching a baseball game.
"Does she need to go out?" Jack asked.
"Yeah, we were waiting for you to get back." Tony replied.
"Liar," Kiefer chuckled, "you're waiting for the end of the game."
Tony gave him a sidelong glance, caught Jack's eyes and knew he was going to get stuck between two fires if they kept it up.
"Hey, you turned it on."
"This is my house."
"You've been cheering as much as I have." Tony tried.
"That's because I really like the Cubs, don't you?"
"They're my favourite team."
"So you were waiting for the game to end." Jack concluded, nailing him.
"Want me to take the mutt out?" Tony sighed.
"No, that's okay, I'll do it." Jack said with a grin, "She likes me better anyway."
The look on Tony's face was priceless.
"You didn't think I'd let you get away with the chaperone business you pulled on me the other day, now did you?"
"Revenge is a dish best served cold Tony, and this one was chilled just right."
He turned, tapped his leg and went downstairs with Molly, taking her for her evening walk.
When Jack came back almost half an hour later, the game was over and Kiefer was getting ready for bed. Molly joined him in his bedroom and Tony and Jack took turns getting ready as well. Tomorrow would be another day.
"Don't disappear on me Brian. If I have to come find you, you won't like it."
"Why would you want to find me?"
"If there's anything else I want to ask you."
"Okay."
