"Please you have to let me finish this." 7pm-8pm
This was a tight episode tonight. A multitude of wonderful moments pulled together in a taut, tense episode. I enjoyed every Chloe moment, every Jack tear, every mole-filled second tonight.
And with that, on we go )
At the consulate, body bags are lined up and Jack's getting checked over. Jack has floating rib fragments. Ewww. Doyle informs Jack he can't participate in the mission to recover the drones due to his injuries. Jack's not pleased.
Out in the desert, one drone is launched. CTU is tracking it and believes it's heading for downtown L.A. Gredenko's pilot auto-flying the drone jammed CTU's tracking ability and so now they can't find it. The military can't find it either. When Lennox informs the Veep about their inability to find the drone, the Veep demands a meeting with the Joint Chiefs to draw up our own target list for a nuclear strike. He believes he has to prove the United States isn't just "rattling it's sabers." *sigh* I see where the season's going. Wargames. We're at Defcon 5 and Matthew Broderick is trying to MacGuyver his way out of a closet.
One interesting thing that happened at CTU - Chloe approached Milo and Nadia and told them she knew Nadia has been using Milo's clearance code. It's a sign of growth (and her constant working "under the radar" with Jack) that she merely warns them to be careful when just a few years ago she'd be running off to Buchanan to turn them in. You go Chloe :)
Jack arrives back at CTU, wincing as Buchanan sort blows him off a little. It was kind of weird actually. As if Bill was angry at Jack which I guess he could be considering Jack went rogue, again, at the consulate. But seconds later when Jack asked what was happening Bill updated him and told him to get to the clinic. Maybe I misread it.
Anyway, Jack heads for the clinic but he sees Marilyn in a room and stops to talk with her. Marilyn tells Jack that she always wished things had worked out between them - and that she sort of thought Jack felt the same way. But when she leaned in for a kiss, Jack turns his head. Ouch. But not wanting to hurt her, Jack is honest with her and tells her there was someone he was with before he was taken to China.
And then the scene got *really* good. Marilyn looks puzzled and asks Jack if he's talking about Audrey Raines. Shocked, Jack says yes he is. And Marilyn has the unfortunate responsibility of telling Jack that....
Audrey is dead.
Ohhhh nooooooo... What followed was some damn fine Kiefer Sutherland acting and some visceral emotion from Jack as he stomps through CTU and hangs up on whomever Chloe is talking to and demands that she tell him why she didn't inform him about Audrey. Jack is livid and vaccilating between pure anger and gut-wrenching grief. It was an amazing scene. What's more is that Jack learns that Audrey died in a car accident in China... while she was trying to get him released from prison there. Chloe confirms there was a DNA match and that there's a file about it. Jack demands to see the file right away.
At the White House, The Vice-prez learns that Karen Hayes will be attending his meeting with the Joint Chiefs. This does not a happy Veep make. As the meeting gets underway, the Veep outlines his plan to retaliate on Fayed's country with a "warning shot" - a light nuclear strike (is there such a thing?) in an unpopulated areas. Karen makes it clear that she disagrees with his POV. But he doesn't care. He just wants to show the world who's got the biggest penis.
Returning to CTU, we get another quirky Chloe moment when Milo is suspicious of Morris who seems to be performing better than he was earlier. He fears that Morris took a drink to settle the nerves so he asks Chloe to check his breath. Chloe sweeps over to Morris, grabs him and plants a big old wet one on him in front of everyone. Morris is pleasantly surprised - until Chloe tells him she was just checking his breath.
Off we go back to the White House where Karen and Tom have a heated argument about the Veep's plans. Karen just can't bring herself to believe Tom would be on board with his plan, especially knowing that Palmer would never have gone along with it. Tom refuses to be drawn in, however, and states that he serves at the pleasure of his superiors. Oooer. But really Tom is pretty much stuck being the Veep's lapdog no matter what he truly believes. But he can't tell Karen that.
At CTU again, Doyle is unable to formulate a plan for taking out the drone because they can't track it. Then Chloe comes in and reveals that the pilot who is working the drone is able to anticipate CTU's satellite movements and that the pilot is being relayed coordinates by a workstation from within CTU. There is a leak in the building.
Doyle looks around the floor and singles in on Nadia. He asks that they start vetting her workstation which sends Milo into a tizzy. He's about to get busted for letting her use his clearance and if she does turn out to be the mole, man is Milo gonna get it. Chloe matches the signature on the data leak to Nadia's workstation and she's immediately arrested... I think it's actually Milo though.
Quick moment with Gredenko when we learn the drone will explode over San Fran. Noooooo that's MY city. Bastards. How dare they destroy the home of Ghirardelli chocolate!
Karen visits Palmer where he's been induced into a coma to fight intra cranial bleeding. Karen asks the doctor if there's any way to bring the president back to consciousness. The doctor says the risks of permanent brain damage are high if such a thing is done and only a family member could give permission. Sandra Palmer looks on as he brother fights for his life.
Doyle begins interrogating Nadia while Morris finds a location for the drone pilot who is three block away. Milo interrupts Doyle who's been threatening, choking, and hair pulling trying to get Nadia to talk. We also learn that Doyle did something in Denver. Something that made Nadia believe that Doyle "gets off" on inflicting pain. Hmmmm. Something to ponder.
In a med unit at CTU, Jack looks through Audrey's file. Photos of a badly damaged and burned vehicle, Audrey's burnt passport and gruesome scene photos conirm to Jack that Audrey was murdered. And he says as much to Bill when he asks Bill to let him go on the mission to get the drone pilot. He says, "Bill, Audrey gave her life trying to get me out of a Chinese prison... Because she thought I was worth it," *sniffle* "I'm not going to let her die for nothing now."
Bill lets Jack go and lets Jack run point. Doyle may not like that. There's not much time. The drone will detonate over SF in three minutes....
Jack and his team are in position. Noticing Jack's wince of pain, Doyle asks if Jack wants him on point. But no, Jack's fine. They quietly storm the building and take out the pilot. Jack takes over control of the drone and in a very tense 30 seconds, manages to steer it away fro its zero barrier and land it in a fiery crash. The device seems to be leaking radioactive material. The core was breached and first-responders were exposed to fatal doses of radioactivity. When the Veep is informed of the situation he looks disappointed the crisis was averted. In fact, he orders the warning strike on Fayed's country proceed as planned. Why yes sir, you do have the biggest penis. Are you happy now?
Jerk.

Hi Melia!
This was a great night!
Hey, is this the US political structure? You have a president, some consultants ... and then nothing!? And if that president happens to be mind-ill, that's just bad luck!? What about his party? This VP is one of the most simplistic views on politics that I have ever seen. The US are not supposed to be a monarchy, are they? He does not care at all about the American people. And yes, he WAS disappointed that he got no fireworks. Like Doyle was disappointed about the interruption of his torture.
What happened to Logan? Did he die or escape?
I would like to see Russian TV: Their president explaining that it was ok that the Americans took the embassy by force: "My wife told me!".
My guess on the next episode is: Karen makes Sandra Palmer to authorize waking up Wayne to state his will and go public then. Of course the VP is going to kill/arrest/blackmail Karen, but Lennox will help her, Wayne will die ... and Karen becomes the next president.
Looking forward to next week!
Michael
Am I just stupid, did I miss something? Did I miss an episode?....... What happened to Logan and all of last weeks set-up.
As far as the US political structure - we currently have a president who is doing just as he wants, despite congress and the senate. The story doesn't fall far from our current truths in Washington.
I thought tonights was a little lame. Why didn't Chloe reveal to the others about the sharing of passwords between Nadia and Milo, especially when they whisked Nadia off to detention. How can you crash land a nuclear bomb, in a fiery crash and not have it go off. I suppose it's possible, but doubtful. And once again Jack/Ctu get around Los Angeles as though they were teleported from scene to scene!
I liked the revelation that Audrey is dead. Sad for her, but it will drive Jack for greater vengeance and inspire him to continue to save the world.
I do think the irreverent attitude of the veep makes for an exciting plot - it will be fun to see how he is handled and the unfolding scenarios!
The US should have fired that warning shot accross the bow on 912.
BTW, it's extremely difficult to detonate a nuke bomb. That's the secret part. Crashing the drone would never set it off.
Audry is alive. Jack saw clues to that in the pictures. Did anyone see the puzzled in Jacks eye?
Milo, nadia, Silver spoons boy, chloe, and chloe's hubby is way to obvious.
I'm really thinking this season will have a bombshell such as Jack, Bill, or Bill's wife.
I can definately make the case for Jack to betray them. LOL I mean think about it, since the inception of this show his government has turned on him and tried to jail him. Hell this season Bill Buchanan was about to have him killed and now they are alll buddy buddy.
I think it could be Bill because he's not obvious and why would he hold that information from jack. And Im sure all of you seen that eye action bill gave jack.
At this point Jack can't trust anyone I mean even his pops and brother tried to off him
I also say it could be bill's wife because the veep is too obvious a jerk and the president always have an inside man that's a rat, but i love this show
Personally i would love for Jack to be the ultimate BAD guy so he could say something cool as they kill him. Something noble like Braveheart when Mel Gibson cries and yell freedom as his head bout to be chopped off.
I'm kinda bothered by the obvious plot indication that Karen is going to wake up the president to let him override the VP's decision. Is that even remotely realistinc? I mean, the Prez was nearlly killed and has been pretty much in a state of coma. An awful lot of medication should have been applied to his body to make him all but senseless even if he's healthy. Is he still supposed to have any rational opinion about anything? The show's plots have been surreal always but after 9/11 we came to realize that we couldn't really write off such absurdity of terrorism. But things should be at least somewhat plausible. Why is it there seemes to be no panic after the nuke explosion in LA? Why is it there seems to be no DEFCON-1 declared after the nuke attack? I love the show and this is the only TV show I care about, but I think those falws are getting too obvious since the last season..
Hello Melia!
Thanks for putting this together for us every week - your summary is (almost) as much fun as watching the show! I believe Audrey is alive - I also saw something in Jack's expression when he looked at Audrey's accident photo.
I'm wearing my 'GUNS DON'T KILL TERRORISTS, JACK BAUER DOES' t-shirt

while I write this!
Not soon enough.
